After reading all the threads about oil consumption. I see that all of you use 5W-20. My truck has always had Motorcraft 5W-30 used in it. Have 65k on it and it has always used near a half qt every 2k. Is this not the right oil to use? Thanks

Yep, it's right on. You have the '99 SD, we use the 5W30. Truck On!
As far as using a half quart - do you fill it to the top mark or just add 6 qts and let it ride?
Big Orn, do you suggest filling to the top mark or just adding the 6 quarts. I've always just put in the 6 and am wondering now if I should be filling to the top mark. Thanks.

I just put in 6 quarts and let it ride. That puts me between the marks and it never moves until the next change.
BTW - How did your engine throw a rod? Folks here may want to know about it. Maybe start a new thread?
