New guy here. Recently aquired a 99 super duty w\v10. I've been doing some research on easy enhancements. I've seen pictures of the K&N fipkII and the banks, wich is part of the stinger. The K&N kit looks to me it would expose you to harm if you encounter deep water, as the filter is open to the engine compartment. The banks looks more shelterd since it uses some of the factory stuff.
I've seen the other posts'. Suppossedly you'll get nearly the same improvement between the two. I personally would still rather have tha Banks Stinger, even though it cost twice as much.
So I'm looking for your experiences and thought s on get things rolling.
I've enjoyed this forum. Lots of great people and info.
On our '97 Expedition, I made a FIPK by cutting away the airbox and installing a K&N filter. After three years of driving- including some nasty off-roading/mud-bogging, we NEVER had a problem with water ingestion. I don't see where the "real" FIPK would be any different.
The Banks "Ram Air" system just has a K&N filter and a slightly larger filter housing. I honestly don't see how it can draw much more air that the OEM setup.
An Army aviator I met online sent me that pic and another one of the finished front part of the box and asked me to put it up online here as he was having some difficulties. I just finished uploading them to my site here and will create a new topic to show case his handy work. I am, however, still waiting for a couple more pics.
He did a real nice clean job! http://www.clubfte.com/users/monsta/airboxmod.html
Now, there's got to be a way to open up the front of the truck a bit to help some cool air get in there. I saw some pics of a guy who drilled a bunch of holes. Looked somewhat ratty to me. A nice oblong hole in the plastic and that flap next to the tranny cooler would be nice. Put some type of "collector/diverter" in there to route the air towards the filter. MAN!!! Where the heck is spring already!?
Search that "other site" for the word zoodad. I did this mod to the '00 F250 back before it had a name. I've also done it to my F350. No adverse effects yet and it sure seems like it should help.
As far as deep water, I dont know about you guys but if I see 4 to 5 feet of standing water, I call that a pond and would turn around and find another way! My FIPK is at least 4 1/2 feet off the ground. If you run into that deep of water, I think you would be calling your insurance company about your totaled vehicle.
But now that I think of it there was that swimming pool I "accidentaly" ran into that was some deep water!!
I guess my point is unless your caught up in an "act of GOD" ie. flood or wash out, why would you take your relitively stock $30,000 + truck into deep water?
Have any of you guys with the open element mod had any (or do you see any) problems if you make a warranty claim? I could see a dealer saying that your problems were caused by opening up the airbox (even though the K&N FIPK is about the same thing).
I like the looks of this mod and I may do it soon, but I need to keep on top of potential warranty problems for awhile. I got a new baby on the way, and if something goes wrong with the new truck (the former new baby), I don't need to be haggling over dumb warranty issues.
In my origanal post I meant water splashing. I would never drive through that much water. In my younger(read as "not very smart") days I would go through any water I saw. Now after learning what happens (it cost be alot of money) I avoid puddles. I still like to try an occasional mud pit. That was my concern. The stuff that splashes around. I don't want to suck that in.
That box mod looks like a good idea. Is that the K&N filter that would replace the stock one?
