The AFE filter website is claiming big torque gains down low. Anyone have one and experience anything like what they claim? They also have two brands of the filter they use. The stand K&N look alike and one they call the ProGuard. Any idea if it's worth the extra $50 for the ProGuard?
I would stick with the factory air filter IMO. In order to increase air flow you have to decrease filtration, thereby allowing larger particles of dust/dirt to pass by. You get a little more air flow but also more engine wear.
Do a search on this forum for aftermarket air filters and read, read, read. Lots of info on it here. There were even some flow tests done and links posted to those tests. From what i can remember of the tests, air flow only increased slightly if at all for the after market filter. In addition there have been reports of dusting occurring in motors with the improved flowing filters.
Collect the data and then make an informed decision based on what you are willing to live with.
i cant really tell any difference with my K&N. the only good thing about it is you can wash it and re oil it instead of buying a new one. but like blackhat said, it doesnt filter as well as an oem.
after it gets plugged with dirt it is supposed to filter bettter, but imo if its plugged doesnt that defeat the purpose of getting a less restrictive filter???
I read a test that was done on this forum or tds and they showed that the proguard 7 filtered better then the stock filter. (measuring silica content in the oil) Also the dealer who does my service sells the pg7 and they said to stay away from the k&n as did the report I read. The K&N had the worst filtering of all the folters they tested. If read many conflicting posts and In my opinion only do the mod if you feel comfortable with the decision. Also in my opinion the pg7 is worth the money and I'll be buying one as soon as they get them back in stock.
My .02 and I'm definatly no expert.
