I was wanting a 67-72 F250 4WD with preferrably a 390 and a NP435/NP205 combo. I was going to put 6" lift and some 325/80R16 (37x13.50x16) X-Terrains. Well, i am having some real trouble finding a lift kit for it. if i can find one that is a factory high-boy and put 2" lift i would be happy with that, but it is looking like this truck would be REALLY hard to find stuff for. So, i was thinking about going back to the 73-79 body. I had a 76 F-100 and a 79 F-250 both 2WD's when i was in high-school.
I really dont ever want to deal with emissions again. That is why i was looking at a pre-73. But my question is this. I cannot find a definite answer about the post-73 emissions. I heard that if a truck is over a certain GVWR (i think i heard 8500) then it is smog exempt. what years does this cover? i won't have anything less than a 250 and if i could find a standard cab 350 i would go for that too. Can someone clarify this for me??? I really appreciate it!
While 73-79 trucks might have to meet emissions STANDARDS. I don't think there was any emissions EQUIPMENT (smog pumps, cats, etc) on 73-75 trucks. Heavier trucks went farther before getting smog stuff.
So i wouldn't need to put any emissions equipment on a 73-75 F250 but it would still have to get a wand up the tailpipe when i go to register? How would i ensure it passed without putting on any smog equipment? i wouldn't necessarily mind putting cats on too much, i just hate how emissions equipment clutters up an engine compartment, as well as robbing HP and what little fuel mileage we get in these monsters!
P.S. i will have this truck in Kentucky for the next year or so (my wife is going to school here) so it wont be a problem here since they dont check for smog equipment. But i will be moving back home to Texas after she graduates, and i am not sure of the emissions laws there. Does anyone know if they even give a sniffer check during registration?? Thanks alot guys for your help.
I live in California and here pre 75 vehicles now dont have to be smogged anymore, after 30 years their exempt. Weve got the strictist emissions laws in the country, so I would guess that anywhere you go, pre 75 should be exempt from emissions. The smog stations cant make you do anything more than have the stock stuff on the truck, so if you get a truck with no emissions stuff stock, then you wont have to do anything to pass a smog test if you end up having the sniffer test. Good luck!
The way it works is the standards are different depending on how the trucks are equipped from the factory.
There is however no national standard emission law. CA may have the toughest standards but other stated aren't required to have the same standard. So pre-75 trucks could still be inspected in other states. You have to check with the local area you are moving to. I've heard that different counties in Texas have different standards.
I am not aware however of any state requiring you to change the emissions equipment that came on the truck originally. Just to keep it in working order.
CA looks to be fairly lenient on the 1975 and older vehicles. Here in the metro counties of Colorado every passenger vehicle is required, unless you have a pre 1942 vehicle with special horseless carriage plates or pre 1959 with collectors plates. Each of those plates carry restriciton on miles you can drive per year. Pre 81's get the pipe sniffer test and you have to have all equipment in place if it was originally there. No other exceptions for being older than a certain date kind of thing.
So I would have to say Colorado's metro counties have some of the toughest emissions laws in the country.
Thanks alot guys, you are all awesome! It sure is great to have the resources available like this website...so much knowledge all at the touch of a button!!! I think i am going to stick with the 67-72's thanks alot!!!
