How does the tranny perform when towing 5000 pounds? And does it have to be left out of overdrive? If I get the manual, can I tow with that in overdrive? Seems to me that it would be no different than towing in 4th (manual). I can't seem to find a used truck with a manual tranny.
I would only use overdrive down grades or at most flat. anything that is going to keep the tranny shifting frequently is not good.. I don't think it would be the same as 4th gear in the old manual because you are not overdriving the engine in 4th at best putting out the same that the engine is.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Mar-02 AT 02:51 PM (EST)]I tow about 5500 pounds with my V-10/4R100 combo- no complaints, but I did add a tranny temp gauge and Banks TransCommand this year- just to protect the investment. I take it out of overdrive in hilly areas, or on winding roads where I'm travelling slower and on and off the throttle constantly. This combo pulls 3000 RPM at 60 MPH with the O/D locked out and about 2200-2300 with the O/D engaged.

I tow about 7,000 lbs (which reminds me that I need to actually weigh the trailer) with V10 & auto tranny. Just lock out OD when the tranny starts to shift too much.
I tow on a daily basis about 6,000 lbs.with an 02 F-350 5.4 auto.
No problems. I do lock out the overdrive when driving around town in stop and go traffic or under 45 mph. Have done same with 99 F-150, 2000 F-150 7700 and current super duty.

Hey there
2001 excursion LTD, V-10, 3.73. I tow 8000 pounds of boat and trailer in the hills of new england all summer long. I don't lock out overdrive. once in overdrive, it takes quite a hill to get it to shift out. The ex tows like a freight train, it loves to work and work hard. Tranny temp never goes up, gas mileage stays around 11 mpg while towing and the engine seems to be happy doing whatever I ask of it. This is a great tow truck, it handles the load well and hasen't done a thing wrong for the 20,000 miles I have on it.
So with that said, do your superduty a favor, put it work. It won't let you down
