4x4 Question

Ive never owned or drivin a truck with 4x4. I read in this forum that the reason why u dont use 4x4 on dry pavement, is that the when they front wheels turn, they do so at different rates, and the strain can mess up the drive line. In 4x2, doesnt this do the same to the rear wheels? Even though they dont turn, they still rotate at different speeds when the truck turns, so wouldnt this cause damage or strain?

Could someone please explain this to me, or am i just mistaken.

Thanks

The strain from differing tire speeds that is referred to is differences between front and rear end speeds, not left to right differences. Your differential takes care of differences in tire speed on the same axle such as during turning. Full-time 'all wheel drive' vehicles have a differential in the transfer case similar to what is in your axles that allows differences in front and rear driveshaft, and thus axle/wheel, speeds. Use your 4wd only on low traction surfaces where you have tire slip and you will be fine. Take the transfer case out of 4wd before you get back on hard ground and you should have no problems disengaging it.

as stated in the previos answer the differential takes care of the difference in speed side to side but on most 4x4 the 2 axles are hooked solid so no way to make of the difference, it's kinda like running a spool in a differential something has to slip usually one of the tires but in the driveline you have lots of links that are put under alot of stress, and will break probably not the first time you do it but they will eventually break
