I am looking to replace my '97 F350 with a Super Duty w/in the next few months and am trying to decided between the V10 and the Diesel. I lived in Utah for some time and the 460 just ran out of air high in the mountians while I watched my buddies with diesels drive away. I now live in Maryland and would face the smaller hills of the east coast. I lean toward the diesel from my personal experience, but wonder if it is worth the money.
I also wonder about gas milage. What do V10 owners get while towing and what do diesel owners get? Again the 460 eats it, are the V10s the same? Any feedback would be appreciated.
BTW I would be pulling a trailered Jeep and stuff, approx 5000-6000lbs.
My suggestion is to do a search on your topic.
This Topic has been kind of beat to death!
I don't say that to be mean or anything !
Just kind of Tired of hearing the v-10 vs psd thing

My old truck was a 91 F-250 HD extended cab 4X4 with a 460 C6 combo. I now have a 2001 F-350 v10 5-speed 4X4. The V10 gets WAY better mileage than the 460 did. I realize the non-OD auto compared to OD 5-speed can be part of the difference, but it is still alot better. Power of the V10 is also better, though it is higher in the RPM's, so be aware of that. Mine has 4.30 gears and they work perfectly with the higher reving V10.
My dad has a 2000 F-350 2wd PSD, and the mileage difference from the PSD to V10 is negligeable. I have driven both on long trips, and there was maybe a 1-2 mpg difference. If it is fuel economy you are after, the added cost of the PSD is not worth the trade off.
As far as power, the PSD of his is in a Dump Truck, which is nice. My V10 is in a regular cab pick-up and I wouldn't want the PSD. It has it's place, and that place is not in my daily driven truck. The V10 has plenty of power for all of my needs. I pull a trailer with a 3300 lb car regularly and lack of power has never been a problem.
That is just what I know from my experiences with both the PSD and V10. Hope it helps.
If I were only hualing 5000-6000lbs I might even consider the 5.4 V-8, The V-10 won't have any problems at all, and the PSD well unless your an excavating contractor hauling equipment everyday of the week and not too much city driving then it's certainly not necessary. The deisel requires 4 gallons of motor oil every 3000 miles I guess some guys go longer, you have to change the fuel filter about every 6 months or 15000mi. you have to waste the extra fuel milage you get on driving around looking for a deisel pump, and deisel is expencive these days, you have to shut your engine off everytime you go to the McDonalds drive through so the lady can hear you, you have to keep the water seperator empty I drain mine out about every 3rd fill up, deisel's seem to scare the average mechanic so just hope you can get someone who can fix it right, oh yes the other thing is I hear they are known for eating tranny's. I have a 1999 and after a year and a half I had 72000mi. on it with no problems at all, then one day I pulled into the 7-11 to get a bite came out and guess what no reverse. no warning or anything just gone, the next day no second gear, and guess what the next thing I know $2500 for a new tranny...I haul heavy but it's not all the time so when I bought another truck I went with the V-10 it does sound like a vaccum cleaner but it does just fine I would suggest limited slip diff, 4.30 gears, trailer tow pkg., camper pkg. I get 12-13.5 mpg on the highway 11 mpg city 10 hauling these are not inflated figures I have never seen 15 like others I hear but then again I have a little bit of a heavy foot

OH YES I ALMOST FORGOT I did have a small problem with my PSD i wonder if anybody else had this problem. I pulled into my parking lot one day went inside came back out and noticed a large puddle under the truck. I found that it was motor oil I checked my level and I was 8 Qt. low. I filled it up and damn it spewed all over the place so I had it taken to the Ford garage and turns out that they use like freeze plugs in certain high pressure oil passages and one popped out and spewed oil all over. They fixed it and 2 months later it happened again to a differnt plug. 2nd time they changed all plugs said they had a recall on them... it sucks going out and seeing that much oil spewed all over the place under such a beautiful engine...
Ok,
I have tried not to taint this site with my past, but after the last post I have to come clean..... I owned a '97 350 CC 4x4 PSD. I felt that it was slow - of course I had come out of a 460 so it was slower.. anyway at 48000 mi. I blew the oil plugs, again at 55000, then at 63000 miles... I took it to the dealer ( a little P/O'ed ) and then I picked it up on a Thurs. and went about 150 miled west of home for the weekend.... I got to the hotel parking lot and unloaded my gear and there was about a quart of oil under the truck... MY WIFE SAID - "WE NEED TO CALL A TOW TRUCK!" I being a little less concerned - figured it was fords problem and just drove it for the rest of the weekend...Yes it kept running.. Drove into the dealer service and said "look under this thing"
So after raising a little with everyone up the chain.. I finally got Ford Reps to do the assistance deal.. To prevent the lemon law BS.. and that is when I traded into my V-10.... You gotta understand that the diesel left a bad taste in my mouth (smell in my driveway)---whatever....
I do understand that some times we get a "lemon" but the way I look at it, I got the diesel I usually put 200K or better and figured it should last - But with previous trucks (gasoline motors) I had run usually up to about 90K before I had any problems - so I was less than pleased with $4000 cast iron boat anchor... breaking...
Just my .02¢
Not here to feed the fire - just a comment (a long one - sorry
All good info, if people dont mind rehashing the subject any more input would still be appreciated. Thanks to those that have given input. Any one have any bad experiences with their V10s? Also those that have had 460s and V10s can you give some comparison as to the milage and towing. Thanks.
I have to say I loved my 460.... It was regular cab, 4x4, 5 speed, xlt w/ 355 gears....F-250 Heavy (8600lbs). I live in the city but drive to ranches -- so read mixed milage... I-35 between Austin - San Antonio... actual speed between 70-85mph.
Hence the 355 gears... drop to third & I could scare the early '90's kids in their new "sports cars" - I grew up on the tail end of the real muscle car days & don't respect rice burners (although my v-10 is real close to one). For pulling - I pulled with a friend who had chevy diesels with loaded trailers (cattle usually-24' goosenecks) and while I sucked alot more fuel... I could jerk anything he could and could get up there to pass other cars ALOT better.
Milage-between 9- 15
9 serious work, city - 11-12 -staight hwy...like out in west Texas-15..I just wanted to test it and was babying it some...
V-10
supercab, 4x4, auto,xlt,373, f-250SD
It feels strong... quicker, higher reving than the 460, lacks the deep growl (torque?) I haven't pulled much - maybe largest load - 7500lbs bumper pull.....
It works well..chipped it last week and jury is still out on that -- although I can FEEL the difference.
Milage - I have gotten 14.5 when new (no changes) I get about 12 all around....
Pulling a 82 bronco to west Texas - got about 11-12 mpg.
Don't check the mileage and you won't feel the pain!

Forty, thanks for looking out for me. As for you gas-guzzlers, I'm drinkin' milk, and one of these days...
>cough, cough, cough,I would buy the V-10 because chicks dig

Sounds like a personal problem.
poolman, you should quit smoking. Cold Turkey man. It's the only way.
What does that have to do with Ford trucks anyway? . Just Kidding guys!
No offense to Jeephauler (the latest to start this up again) but everytime I see this topic, I say to myself, "Geez doesn't ANYBODY research first"??
But you know, these always turn into a conversation that could be had by a bunch a guys sittin' around a fire with a few cold ones. It also gives those who haven't participated in the thousands of others like it a chance to give there two cents.
