Has anyone else had the catch (part of the dash) for the glovebox break off and now the box wont stay shut and just hangs there and vibrates and bounces and makes all kinds of annoying noize and S***!?! (run on sentence) To replace that catch, you have to replace the dashboard...yeah pretty much the whole thing from what I can see anyway. Anyone got a light to shine on this problem or some other info im missing like its not the main dash piece that is broken its a 5 dollar part that you can get at 7-11. It had velcro holding it shut for a while but thats wearing out fast.
89' ive got 2 F-150s of the same vintage but havent gotten a chance to look at them, my dad has 1 at the beach and my brother has the other one while hes away at school. Far as i can tell the catch is on the main dash panel because there is a chunk broken out of that right about where it should hit. Super glue would be nice if i had the chunk that broke out, but i have this feeling that it along with about 9 of the 20 original lug nuts are long since gone.
From what im seeing now there is a separate catch part from what is actually broken off: the latch doesnt line up with the broken part. Im going to do some more investigating, will keep posted.
I posted the pictures of my fix in my gallery. It took me 2 hours, give or take a half. The catch is actually a filler rod bent into a loop and twisted at the end, the tab with the screw through it is just a piece of 18 gauge scrap steel i had laying around. The steel is folded and pinched over the rod and then screwed into the metal frame behind the dash board. I had to grind away some of the plastic in addition to what was already broken out in order to expose enough of the metal plate to mount the catch. Its not quite as clean as original, but looking at it from the front you wouldnt really notice it as being a driveway job. 1 down 97 rattles to go!
