What does engine ping sound like?
a ball peen hammer on a stainless pan I would say, about as close as I can say, or at least from the times I have heard it.
A hollow metal taping sound kind of, somewhat high pitched, that may actually depend on size of combustion chamber and area on surface of pistons and what not.

Wow, never thought of it that way as to how to describe it. Jimmy Dean is right about how the variables can make it different.
Sometimes you can here it really clearly, other times its very faint and only a trained ear will catch it.
But why do you ask?

Sounds like a handful of BBs in the cylinders...I should know. My truck does nothing BUT ping. I gotta get a break on weather, so I can hook up with my buddy the Ford tech and get her re-timed...

The best possible description I can give is, it sounds like a big rattling Cummins. mine was really bad until I switched to midgrade gas, now its completely gone, and I get better gas mileage.
BTW, midgrade around here is 87, not 90 like the rest of the country.

Mine pings from time to time if I use a lower grade of fuel.If what you are refering to is spark knocking. It does kinda sound like a Cummins engine now that I think of it,real bad on the big hills.
