I redid the ground wire today, and the guage still is not working, so im thinking the guage has died, unless the sending unit in the thermostat housing is shot somehow, but i dont think that is the case, will most likely replace the guage.
You can test your temp gauge by unhooking it from the sender. Then get someone to turn the key forward while you get the wire and ground it. If your gauge goes up to hot then you should be good. Do not leave it grounded for a long time because you can wreck the gauge. Good luck.

P.S. Sending units are cheap and easier to replace so you may just want to change that too.
