My V10 makes this wierd kind of grinding noise once in awhile on a cold start. It almost sounds like the starter sticks but not not quite. The dealership pulled the starter and checked the ring gear thats all OK. They suggested making sure the A/C is off when I start it but the noise still shows up. It will even make a similar noise when sitting at idle. 01 C/C V10 auto dually 2wd.
Any ideas or other people experience this problem????
Mine does the same thing. The starter sticking (for only a second) is a real good description of the sound. It does not do it all the time. Usually only first start in the morning, but not every morning. I actually thought I was holding the key a little too long or something clumsy like that. I'll pay closer attention to it.
I had the same noise on cold starts with my 1999 v10 and took the truck back 2 times until the rep heard the noise . My noise was accompanied by a split second puff of blue smoke. It sounded like the motor was starting with no oil, but he noise would cease in a few seconds.
There is a tsb for the piston slap problem for v10's and the 5.4 that advises the service department to tell consumer that there is no effect on long term durability, BUT they will replace motor if the customer insists.
I insisted on it and my v10 was replaced at 28000 miles with a Ford Quality Replacement (FQR) motor. I was not happy with that, but Ford will not give you a new factory motor. Many people think that Ford will give you new in a warranty replacement but they are FQR motors.Check the valve covers if you had a motor replaced and you will see FQR stamped somewhere.
My replacement was done by Holman Truck in Maple Shade N.J. and they did an excellent job.(no melted hoses or leftover parts)
They are tight lipped about the tsb which came out in 1999 and 2000.
Good luck.Check with your dealer for the tsb or research it on the net.
Thanks feelas its nice to know I'm not the only one. Outside temp doesn't seem make a difference as it happens at 30C or or -5C( sorry don't have my conversion cap on right now) . and it doesn't do it every time and no smoke (only 4800 miles so far so it better not.:-X23 )
Exhaust heat shield sounds like another noise I.ve heard too. Will check it out. First the snow has to go then I can bring Baby home.
Thanx again.
