Okay so I am a newbie with no clue about what I am looking at. After owning cars all my life I pretty much understand the whole MM percentage ratio thing with car tires or the whole 275/75R16 measurement deal. Now that I own a real truck, can someone take a moment to explain real truck tire dimensioning? I mean the whole 33 X 12.5 stuff. I am assuming that this is real American measurements of the heigth and width of the tire but I am not sure. Or could you refer me to a good website that can? I would really appreciate it. It would be nice to understand this. Thanks
Thanks but as I said I understand that. What I need to know is what is the definition of the other types of truck tire measurements such as 33X12.5. Is this standard measurements? What are the standard size ranges for this dimensioning?
Yeah okay so it is in standard inches. I was still not sure about the whole width thing. I will have to measure my tires to see if it is to the middle of the tire. I found a website that I am not done reading that seems to have some pretty good info explaining truck tires. http://www.tiresafety.com/size_class/size_nav4b.htm
Thanks everyone! Once again you really came through in a hurry!
It is the overall width of the tread, as I understand it. If it was from the edge of the wheel to the middle of the tread, your wheels would be two feet wide!! The distance from bead to bead will vary depending on what size rim you have them mounted on. Typically a 12.50" wide tire is mounted on a 10" wide wheel. Yes, all measurements are made in Standard (inches).
33x12.50-15LT The first number is diameter. Second width. Last, rim diameter. LT stands for Light Truck. Where you find a 'C', 'D', or 'E', that is the load range, or weight-carrying rating of the tire.

I thought the 275 is the height and the 75 is the width.
Because when my dad got new tires for his truck he went from 235 to 255 and they were taller, they were both 75 16R
No, the first number (235, 255, etc...) is the width. The 75 is a percentage of the width, not a specific height measurement. They are taller because 75% of 255mm is more than 75% of 235mm.
