step bumper

i have a 94 f350 and i was wonderin how to tell if it has the rear step bumper. I was plannin on puttin a recovery shackle through the bumper hole to pull people out of the mud with and wanted to make sure that the bumper could handle it if it happens to be a step bumper. Thanks

The step bumper will have a flat top usually with X-pattern tread plate on top of it and an indentation in the center of it where there is a hitch plate with 3 holes for trailer hitch ***** to be mounted. The step bumpers used on these late model trucks are not very stout. Mine is aftermarket and really flimsy, at least the top and face of it are. The center section with the hitch plate is descently strong but not suitable for pulling anything other than a small utility trailer, in my opinion. You can hook up a chain there for pulling people out of the mud and probably be fine if you dont do it every day and dont JERK them out, but pull smoothly.

I put a 2" class V frame-mount reciever hitch on mine and when I want to pull some stuck vehicle out, I slide in a towing hook I made to fit the reciever hitch by bolting a tow hook to a piece of 2x2 hitch tube and drilling a hole for the hitch pin to go through. It works great and has pulled out it's share of stuck vehicles in the desert.
