'79 351m Oil Gage Function?
Another stupid question from an inexperienced driveway mechanic in training. Where is it, and how does the factory oil pressure gage on a 1979 351M function? My gage starts off up at about the "A" in NORMAL when cold. (I understand that the viscosity is high when the oil is cold.) When the engine reaches normal operating temps the oil gage goes down to about the "N". (I understand that the viscocity goes down when the oil gets warm.)
I'm just curious where the gage lead is on the engine and how the gage works. Also, what might cause such a swing in my gage readings? Is this okay, or is my engine in trouble? Finally, what do most of you run for oil in an engine of this vintage? I live in Michigan and the coldest we usually see is -10's in the winter max.
By the way, the guy I bought the Bronco from claims the mileage is original. It at about 68,000 right now.
Thanks for any help!
The sending unit is on the back of the block right behind the intake.
personally I like valvoline 10w-30 oil
Hook a mech gage up temporarily if you want to read actual pressures. Running an oil line into the cab can be a recipe for a dangerous mess, or a dead engine if the line ruptures in the engine compartment.
I like to run the factory electric gage with a set of temp and pressure switches hooked to a red "trouble" indicator light.
