Be careful using alternative grades of diesel fuel the fines if you are caught can be quite steep. I think red is not intended for street use.

red is used for agricultural purposes only,if you get caught you can get fined. the reason they use red dye is that it is cheaper because it doesnt have taxes placed on it

Red is for off-road use only, and you will be fined hevily for using it on the road, even a truck that you might use around the farm and not on the road can get you fined, I don't know how they would check it if you don't take it on the road. But there is no difference I heard. Even talking about using Off-road diesel fuel can get you in trouble, because the topic has come up before. I suggest this thread be closed.

There is no difference between regular diesel and off road diesel, other than the red dye. As others stated it is not taxed, hence the reason its dyed. The department of transportation can dip your tanks to see if its regular or not. You can get some real hefty fines if it comes up red.

No diffrence between the two, just as stated no road tax on the offroad fuel. Yes you can be fined if caught, but the chances of being stopped with a pickup are slim, DOT is under staffed and chase after the big rigs where the big fines can make them money.

Judging from the price increases on fuel that are predicted in the near future we may all be burning used motor oil. Opec is cutting back on production and increases of 50 to 75 cents per gallon are predicted. I wish all of the folks that claim we invaded Iraq for the oil would explain to me how we are benefiting....

FAstFreddie, I agree with your comment, either used oil or fryer grease. Imagine all the PSD running around smelling like french fries and chicken wings!

You are right the big rigs are the money makers. However I have heard stories where the DOT would show up to a horse or livestock auction, and start dipping tanks on the diesel trucks. Don't know if this is true or not but I have heard it from different people several times.

Lots of rumors about this stuff.

Well I have my own opinion about red fuel. First off don't be scared to talk about it, second it's not illegal to run it in your farm truck if you?re on your farm using it for work. I have mine set up in an auxiliary tank and YES I do run it on the farm. A little over a year ago I was stopped by DOT on a public highway who dipped my tank, found red fuel and yes I received a ticket. The guy was a real jerk, nailed me for lots of petty stuff like: The tread depth on my steering tires was below the legal allowed limit, no break away chains on my trailer and so on (I?m not trying to say I was totally innocent). I explained to the officer that the tank in my bed contained the clear fuel that I was burning which was confirmed by his testing but he told me that since I was running it in my main tank he was going to issue the ticket and I could speak to the judge about it. I went to court told the judge I ran it on my farm and had a tank in my bed that held the clear fuel I run on the highway. I had pictures of the auxiliary gas tank in my truck along with receipts from the guy who plumbed it for me. The judge threw out the charge of running red fuel but made me pay for the other offenses. I don't recommend running red fuel on public highways, BUT IN NO WAY ARE WE GOING TO GET IN TROUBLE FOR TALKING ABOUT IT.

A few more notes:

-Red diesel is exactly the same as your regular pump diesel it simply has the red dye so it can be easily identified by DOT.

-Red Diesel is a non-taxed fuel meant solely for the use of Tractors, Generators, Heaters, and other equipment used on farms, construction sites etc..

Finally to answer the origional question,

does anyone know if red diesel fuel produces more white smoke than clear fuel? thanks
Ya know i never noticed anymore white smoke but honestly I don't know.
