How much difference is there between the cheapie generic and the expensive auto-darkening masks? What specs should I look for ? I need to do some bodywork welding on my '53 F100 and with my plain #11 it just makes me wait to long for me to see shere everything is when the arc strikes.
I know that I'm a crappy welder, but I'm hoping that the auto-darkening shield would let me orient to the arc and materials more quickly.
My bro just got me an auto darkener in the $125 range and I couldn't be happier. You'll never go back. My old helmet just hangs around for spectators now.
Funny thing tho, I still find myself nodding my head before I pull the trigger! LOL! And then I'll immediately pop it up to check my weld which I also don't need to do. It lightens automatically too!
I have heard there's 2 types. Solar and battery. Mine's a solar and initially I kept it in the box. Well it was new! But then it started acting funny. Incandescent bulbs would almost always darken it and then even flourescent's were puttin' out the light. I leave it out to charge now and it only darkens when it's supposed too.
auto darking is the way to go! i have a speedglass battery operated paid about 165$ for it 3 yrs ago
it goes tru hell and back no problems yet. it goes from shade 3-10.
good luck
