The engine on my old truck is kinda gummed up on the inside...
I took off one of the valve covers to discover this....! My b-in-law told me that if I drained the oil and put in diesel fuel and let it run for a while....this would help....are there any dangers in this....or is he just trying to put it to me....? I have also been told that ATF would also help clean the engine.....Help....!
I've heard of the diesel/kerosene trick, but don't think I'd ever try it. Companies make speciality products for safely removing gummy deposits. Head to a part store and look for engine flush products.
I wouldn't do anything. Flushing an old engine is asking for trouble. I'd only change the oil more often to slowly clean it out. Being gummed up is not effecting the way it runs. But flushing it sure might, and you might not like what happens. Could start to smoke more, increase noise, due to the increased clearances, etc. MK
I have never tried the product but a lot of guys on the bobtheoilguy.com forums swear by it. It seems to make sense.
Don't use Motor Flush or other Kerosene based products unless you pull the oil pan and remove deposits and clean the oil pump screen. It would block your oil passage and you would loose oil pressure. I did it and locked up an oil pump.
Hey there,
My old 390 was completely full of oil sludge in the lifter galley and valve covers. I scraped out what I could, then put new oil in with nasty motor flush stuff and ran the living hell out of it for a couple days. When I drained the oil I had chunks that wouldn't even fit through the drain hole
Marvel's mystery oil will thin your oil out, I wouldn't reccomend it unless you run a heavier weight oil. If you use a high detergent oil there is also the change of developing a lot of oil leaks. Just something to think about - I have been in the same situation and tried most of the things mentioned.
i think this was brought up just recently in another thread but this is what we did.
drain oil, replace filter, add diesel fuel about 6 quarts.
unhook dizzy
crank engine for about 10 seconds
wait 1 min
crank engine for 10 seconds
drain diesel fuel
add oil
hook dizzy back up
run for a couple minutes
drain oil change filter
add oil.
this cleans out alot and the
limited exposure of diesel just
cleans up the loose sludge and grime
but doesnt really clean out everything
cost about 3 times the normal oil change
we do this once a year
I run some JB through my 360, because it had all kinds of junk in it. When I changed oil you wouldn't believe the crud that came out. the only drawback was that it also removed all the varnish and crud off the main and rod bearings and man was it noisy. I ended up rebuilding the engine and the bearings were not in good shape.
stay away from the diesel if this is the same truck from the other thread and has been sitting in mothballs for some time the seals are dry and brittle if you put fuel on them kiss em goodbye run a lightweight oil 5w30 for long enuf to get oil through the motor then run standard weight oil in it
the lighter oil will flow easier and get to all the dry seals and help lube em back up
a good old trick, and cheap, is get a quart of marvel mystery oil and add however much will bring ur crankcase to full. at least a pint anyway. dump the rest in the gas tank and fill it and run the tank out then do the oil and filter change. whatever u do dont go to the oil forum
