Remote entry

I just bought a 2-door '98 Explorer. It does not have the numbers
on the outside of the door. Did all Explorers that came with remote
entry come with those number buttons on the outside? Excuse my
newbiness, I have a '98 Mustang that I just click UNLOCK and it
will pop the locks and I just want to know if I can reprogram an
ebay explorer remote to work with this new explorer or if I'm out of luck.

To my knowledge no Explorer came with remote door locks that didn't have the keypad on the door.

Am not positive but i think the remote entry (numbers on the door) was just anther option on explorers and you can have the key pad keyless entry as well. Do you know how you use the numbers on the door to lock unlock the doors ect?

If your truck came with keyless entry, you can re-program the new remote to work with your truck. Don't bring it to the dealer, they will want $30 - $60 to do it for you.

It's very easy:

1: Get in the car, and close the door. Make sure you have the remote with you.

2: Put the keys in the ignition, and cycle the switch from off to run eight times. Don't start the car. After the eight time leave the ignition off.

3: If you have done step #2 correctly, your door locks will start locking and un-locking by them selves. Now push all the buttons on the remote.

Your remote should now work. Get out of the car and try it out.

jmalecek,
Just programmed my truck, and your process worked fine, except for the part 2. I had to leave the ignition on, then when the code worked, the doors locked and unlocked again to let me know.

Thanks

I tried that. It didn't work. My guess is that I don't have remote keyless entry?

First, do you have a fat PATS key? 2nd, to see if you have keyless entry, get into your explorer lock the doors then open up your drivers door WITH OUT hitting the unlock button. If your horn honks, then you have keyless entry(to stop horn from honking, put your key in the drivers door and turn it towards the unlock position.)
