I just bought a 1989 Ford F450 with a 460 gas engine and 5 speed manual. When I test drove the truck it ran great. When I drove it home and came to a stoplight and downshifted it shutoff. It restarted , no problem. Whenever I slow down to make a turn or stop it stalls. It always restarts. I tried slowing down and not downshifting, same thing. The check engine light comes on and goes off, sometimes. The truck runs great other than this. I had a code reader check the computer and the codes are 17 and 217. They(autozone) don't know what they stand for. I ordered shop manuals today but does anyone know what they mean? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Matt
The 17 sounds like the throttle stop is too low. The engine should idle with the idle air control solonoid disconnected - if it doesn't, turn the screw in on the throttle stop to bump it up until it will run.
"RPM below Self-Test limit with Idle Air Control off" is the definition I have.
217 isn't valid on your vehicle anyway, it only has one coil and a distributor...
One common problem is the IAC valve that controls idle speed by bypassing air. If it gets dirty, they all do, it can stick or clog the holes. It can be cleaned, but make sure no cleaner gets into the electrics.

Thanks for the replies. I have a starting point. The guy from Autozone tried but there was nobody home. After I posted, I found the list on what the error codes mean. Troubleshooting error codes was never my strong point but I'm trying to save a trip to the shop. I will post back when I look at it. Thanks again.

I finally pulled the codes using the jumper wire and a voltage meter. The codes I got are 33,17,and 23. This is telling me Throttle position sensor, air control valve, and EGR valve. Could one affect the other? Do I troubleshoot each one according to the manuals? Thanks Matt
