Buddy of mine's 98 XLT F-150 died (his words), bought it off him. He said the motor was locked up. Also he says it has an interceptor motor in it. How do I tell that???
I cranked it over and it acts like it "jumped timing" It will crank and acts like it will almost start. No check engine light visible.
I got a Haynes manual on it. Seems that if the timing chain(s) are bad. Then according to the manual "I WILL have valve damage."
have I diagnosed right? Did I miss something simple stupid??
Would I be better off finding a wreck with a good motor or rebuild the existing motor??
Does it have spark? That would be my first check. Also on the 98's the fuel pump has a shut off by the passenger's feet, on the exterior side. But to answer your main ? , If it were me, it would depend on the cost of each solution. If I had a guy that built engines cheap, I'd rebuild. If I knew a guy at a wrecking yard, and could get a good motor at a good price, I'd go that route for less downtime. I think you have to find an engine of the same model year, though.
If it is the basic 4.6L or 5.4L, there is no Interceptor engine.
The police package has true duals and a little hotter set-up in the PCM programming. The engines are the same internally.
I'll start with the basics, check fuel, spark, hope its not in the valve timing.
1st I have to get it off the trailer and on the ground in the morning.
Anyone have an idea of how (on the motor itself) I can tell how many liters it is (and I am missing the top plastic cover that says that). Or what model heads (windsor, etc if I did my homework right).
I think he means interference engine, not interceptor motor. By interference engine, I mean that the valves will crash into the pistons if the timing chain breaks.
