This one is for all you computer experts, we have 2 computers in our house, 1 we've had a long time (2000) and it works great, there is only like 1 pop up ad every hour or less. The second one we got was a dell, and the thing gets like 10000 popup ads/min. We have DSL and the two computers are connected to it through a router. Our (2000)computer does not have any popup blocker on it, the new dell has a couple of programs, 1 is a popup blocker, and the other is a spyware eraser. how come the dell gets 1000 popup ads and the (2000) one gets hardly any? I set the security settings to the highest ultra-safe level there is on the dell. With a little improvement. What can i do to stop the problem?
You can download a very good pop-up blocker program form Downloads.com. It's from Paincware and it's called Pop-up Stopper Free Edition. I use this program and it works great. The only small problem with this program is sometimes you have to turn it off to accesss some web links.
Install ad-aware6 and zone alarm. Ad aware removes spyware and zonealarm controlls how programs access your internet service. downloads.com is a good source for both.
You could purchase a router with firewall built in. This is an expensive option. Pop ups spawn from programs or scripts running on your pc or remote servers. These tools will help you out, the above pop up killers will help with the annoying occasional popup after you clean up. good luck
I dont think so....but it seems my brother fixed it. He just did the thing where the computer erases everything up to its last system save (somtime last november) and now everything works fine. must have been something installed that shouldnt have been, thanks guys!
windows XP,2000, and milin, has a flaw in it that allows pop ups intrude into your system, no patches are needed to fix this, i'll to find the procederesand post them later. aol told me about it theyll . some pop stoppers add spyware when you down load them, don't how of that is true, but i'm been very leary of any kind of down loads here lately
Not to get to geeky but the "flaw", windows messaging service, is designed to allow system admins to pop up messages to users like "Server x is being taken down for repair, please log off" This pops up in a grey box with an ok button. If you run a firewall and block the port it sends on or just disable the service it will not allow pop ups from the public internet to open on your system. To disable it on w2k or xp go to the control pannel/admin services click services. select messenger and double click. click stop and set startup to disabled.
HTML (web page) popups can come from spyware on your system or webpages themselves. Pop up killers are good for the ones on web pages but will not remove spyware.
