Abendx's post has almost convinced me to try the DIABLO chip, but I have a couple questions. First, I have a 5.4 and will be pulling a 28' fifth wheel camper on occasion. Will this help with the 5.4's ("underpoweredness"... is that a word ????) Also, the shifting on my SD isn't crisp, its more like milktoast... will the chip firm up the shifting, and if it does, is there an appreciable difference in the u-joint life span.
With a large camper and a 5.4, don't expect miracles (ie, the 5.4 won't become as powerful as a 6.8) but it should definitely help, especially with the shifting. Tranny should run cooler when towing with the chip than without due to less slippage during towing. One of the best things about a chip is the great shifting! As to u-joint life span, I suppose it could be possible to shorten the span but ONLY if they are loose and have play in them already --- there isn't any slack in them normally so they don't get abused with a chip. I've never heard of any u-joint issues even with Powerstrokes towing with 78 HP chips and 4" exhausts. If anything, the lurch you normally get between gears under heavy throttle is gone.
Thanks Ken, I'm gonna order the chip today. one last question, my wife occasionally drives my truck ( although I put her through a strenuous debriefing upon return) and even though I'll tell her to put premium in it. She "might forget". Will it adversely affect, on a permanent basis, the engine/drivetrain/computer. Or should I just tell her NO, take your Durango.....
Thanks again Ken
FTE ABSOLUTELY RULES !!!!!!!!!!!! ( Go Dale Jarrett!)
It should not be driven with 87. It'll sound like a bag of marbles from the pinging (unless your ECU has a VERY good knock sensor). Prolonged driving with pinging can cause engine damage.
My wife put 87 in our Ranger last week by mistake. Under anything but the slightest acceleration it pinged like crazy. It WAS driveable but only if you drove life a grandma in an underpowered 82 Coupe DeVille. Two bottles of octane booster didn't help so I pulled the chip until yesterday when I put in 93 octane.
STRESS to her that it has to be premium, even if that means putting a label on the gas cap!
