truck avenger problems

Is anyone running a 670 truck avenger on a 400 with any luck in tuning? I have one on mine and I cant seem to get rid of the off idle flat spot. I have gotten it to the point where it doesnt die or back fire when you punch the gas but it still doensnt rev smoothley out of this range. I have tried both and orange and green cam and from 28 to 37 shooters. If any one has any more ideas it would be appreciated.

I put the 770 on my 400 and can roast my 33's with no hesitation whatsoever. Still working on jetting and timing until I get it right. What kind of ignition, cam and intake are you using??? Give us some more info.

Check your timing and distributor advance mechanisms. Is the vac advance hooked up properly?

I had a 600 holley on the motor before and it did not hesitate at all. I am running a stock distributor recurved, msd ignition and coil, 265 comp cam. Once it gets past 1500 rpm it screams.

The way I follow your post, Orange, all your problems are from idle to 1500. Since the 600 worked good before, that should rule out any problems with valves or ignition. Sounds too much like a vacuum leak somewhere. Does it idle ok??? How was the idle when you first put the 670 on?? Did you have turn it up much?? The truck should have idled good with the factory settings with no vacuum leaks. The very first 600 I put on (a 390), had problems very similar to this, turned out I had a very loose fitting hose on the pcv valve that was letting enough air in to cause a vacuum leak and cause bad off idle response. Look over anything that could cause a leak, any hose, baseplate to carb, vacuum tree to intake, or any vacuum hose on the firewall.....anywhere.

I would suggest initial timing but more likely the clearance between the acc. pump lever and the sdjustment screw. If you look down the carb (choke and engine off) and slowly open the throttle you should see some fuel start to squirt immeditately out of the nozzles. Any delay at all can cause problems. Don't adjust all the slack out of the screw.

I think I figured this out. My distributor must have not been tightned down all the way and got bumped when I installed the new carb. I had just got the timing right with the old carb on. Brought the timing back to about 14. It was at 6. Now it has better response and I can get back to tuning for power. By the way what power valves are people running. Stock is 6.5 in the truck avenger. My engine now pulls about 16 inches of vaccume at idle but have yet to hook up the guage in the cab and drive. Thanks for the help!!

You are probable OK with that power valve but the recomendation is 2 inches below cruise vacuum reading.

I had tons of trouble with mine. I started by going to a 35 pump discharge nozzle. Helped a little. The upped the jets two sizes. That helped a lot. Got it more and more tuned. Now I've dropped back down to the 28 nozzle again. It didn't hesitate in my one test drive. I'm welding in an O2 sensor this weekend so I should get to tune it better.

So GendoIkari69
, what are you going to use to read the O2 sensor? I've heard tales of reading them with multi meters or do you have something else?

I bought Summit Racings O2 sensor and gauge. The gauge looks really nice at night. However it appears that it will be hard to read during the day.
