I run regular dino oil - Havoline 20W50, b/c I have some blow-by.
The reason I am asking from previous is finally replaced my pass side valve cover gasket. The small pcv fitting attached to the back of the upper manifold was packed with carbon to include the small piece of hose that connects to the pcv valve. Thus, the inside of the valve cover to include the head was caked in carbon. I had & have noticed previously little pieces (chunks) of carbon in my oil at oil changes. The reason for my oil leak was of course oil blowing from the valve cover b/c of too much pressure-it had to go somewhere!
Anyway, sorry for long-wind, just need to know a good safe cleaner I can run thru my oil.
As far as I know there is no cleaner to remove carbon from the engine oil! The only places you should have carbon is on your piston's and exhaust valves and system. The only engine cleaners I know of help to clean off sludge in the system. It sounds like you might have some sort of other problem to have all that carbon, like a E.G.R. valve stuck open or something to that effect, that is allowing exhaust gas to be sucked into your P.C.V valve. The only trick I know of to remove carbon from the tops of the pistons is to take a spray bottle of water and mist it into the intake while the motor is running. But even that could be dangerous if your motor is old or you spray to much water in, remember it does not compress to well!
I had thought of that old farmer, and I am going to try some MMO this weekend on an oil change. Two days into the change, I checked my pcv valve, tube, and fitting going to the upper manifold-no chunks of carbon. I am going to keep and eye on this.
I am going to try your suggestion (old farmer) this weekend. ALSAIR you are right on the carbon build up, I went thru three EGR vlv pos sens from NAPA, broke down and bought one from FORD-no problems since. But, what I had found after removing (put off for 10 mos),my upper manifold and pass side valve cover is that YES there was a problem for some time b/c of what you mentioned. The fitting on the back of the upper manifold was PACKED w/carbon to include a core that went inside of the upper manifold-not pretty.
Anyway, I appreciate ya'lls thoughts and input. Thank you.
not sure about halvoline, but we used to get that alot with pennzoil, after we started running quaker state it all went away, but i too would say the marvel mystery oil, just dont be like my dad and use too much!
Yeah I've seen an engine taken apart that ran Pennzoil its whole life, I was completely speechless on how it looked, it was terrible, I use Castrol GTX seems good
Might want to relocate that PCV pretty soon, do a search for PCV relocation, it can be rerouted to the vacuum tree on the intake manifold, I heard this helps, but won't help with carbon build up, but it might on the #8 cylinder, and helps a little bit with performance and engine life too!
