Trans jump?

I have a 97 Ranger 4.0 with auto overdrive. Not sure which trans it is. Sometimes when under partial exceleration, I mean very slight, the truck will seem like it tries to shift to neutral then back to forward very quickly. This causes a very quick hesitation and jerk in driveline. Is this common, does it hurt anything. This is the first Ranger I've owned and everything else is great. I love the truck except for it being so light in the rear on slick roads.

Have you checked and/or changed the fluid lately? If it is low, you could get some slippage.

Does this only happen when accelerating from a stop or at speed?

Always moving, but normally under 20 MPH. Trans has been serviced with correct fluid and level is right. It did this before servicing and did not change after.

Does it feel like a surge, or like the trans is disengaging (engine revving)? It sounds to me like either the torque converter is locking and unlocking for some reason, or you're experiencing the beginning of transmission failure.

I'd take it to a dealer or transmission shop and have them test drive it to see what they think.
