Ok, have put a good test drive on the 93 Ranger that I posted about earlier. I tracked the VIN number and it is a 4.0 with 82k miles. The clutch is new and the 4x4 works like a charm. Its got chrome nerf bars, diamondplated toolbox, oversized tires, bug shield (who buys these anymore?), and chrome bed rails. If you want pictures go to my website here.
Ultimately, I think you need to decide how much you want to spend on a truck; there is a large price difference between the two you are looking at. If you use it daily, that will weigh in; just a few times a week likewise. How long do you plan to keep it and how many miles per year will you rack up? I think overall you need to consider what you will be the most happy with and go for it. BTW, I'm not sure on the price on the new one, but we have an FTE member that is a dealer; you might wanna run the price and equipment past him before buying new, if you decide on that, just to make sure your dealer is being reasonable.
BTW, it's got Firestone Wilderness tires on it. I had those when I got my Ranger new; a bulge developed around 45K miles, and naturally on a front tire. This was before the big fiasco hit the media too. IMHO, I'd ditch those tires fast, and adjust his price accordingly.
i dont think ford makes the ranger 4x4 with the 3.0L in it any more. but i could be wrong. buy the old one they look better and you can do a lot more to the 4.0L than the 3.0L.
My 93, just like that one except black, is now at 115,000 miles and doing great. I think for the money saved you could do some nice mods to that 93, (chip, intake, exhaust) I personally would not be satisfied with a 3.0, so to me, even though it isn't new, the 93 is a better buy. You will also appreciate the toolbox. Plus I'm betting that the 04 has the short box, and even with the tool box in the 93, you will have more room in the box than the 04 without it. Also, 32" tires fit nice on it, so if you do replace them, that's the size to get, IMO.
Yeah, i'd go with the 93, it has low miles for that year, my 94 has like 110k on it, and its still runnin strong, And even IF the engine and the tranny were to blow apart you could replace them both and still save money not buying the 04, plus its got the 4.0 in it.
My 1994 4.0 XLT has 144,400 on it, just had to have the tranny replaced, but it runs really strong still. I was thinking of trading it for a 70's pickup or a 78/79 Bronco, but after putting it back on the road after six months, I think Im going to keep it...
Go with the 93, that is some great milage on it, but new tires are a MUST....

The 93 is a shortbed so no difference. If anybody wants to buy this super nice diamondplated DELTA toolbox after I possibly buy the truck LET ME KNOW!
I like the '93 and I'm sure you'd be happy with it, but I think the price is way too high. I'd check around for prices and do a NADA and/or Blue Book on it - I would think it should sell for somewhere around $3,000.
