I just did the tranny service on my 99 XLT, and forgot to put the magnet back into the pan.... seeing how I do the trans service every 15,000 miles, do you guys think I would face any problems not having the magnet in the pan until the next service? I'm to avoid having to drop the pan again... as you all know it makes quite a mess no matter how careful you are.
thats a good question but i wouldn't want to be the one to find out...i would suggest putting it back in to be on the safe side...i wouldnt want the bill if it does harm anything.
I really don't think you would have any problems, unless the last time you cleaned it there was a lot of metal in the pan. But again - I would hate to know I was wrong....
There really wasn't much of anything in the bottom of the pan, or on the magnet for that matter. Just a slight grey film and that was it. Having already replaced one trans on my previous Explorer, I really don't feel like doing it again any time soon. Guess I know what I am going to be doing this weekend.
One thing you might consider doing, disconnect the tranny cooler lines, start the engine, and put it in DRIVE. You can now pump the
old ATF into a container, and it eliminates the mess of dropping the pan. Another advantage of doing this, you flush the old ATF out of the torque converter also......
Use only Mercon V ATF!!!!!!!

Love the Idea concerned that i would damage the Tranny draining it while its engaged and running
any thoughts as to this-if not dangerous i'd prefer that to droppin the ole pan
No, it will not damage a thing!!!!!
Just watch for bubbles in the ATF coming out the cooler lines. When I flush mine, I will pump, then add 1 gallon at a time, until I
have gone through about 3 gallons. I drop the pan on the 3rd gallon, before refilling. After dropping the pan, I change the filter,
and clean the pan extremely well, only using lint-free cloths. The
smallest of lint particles can mess up the valve body!!!!! I believe that this is one of the reasons for a high tranny failure rate after changing the ATF.....The other reason is refilling with the wrong
ATF. CHeck out this Ford TSB for the correct ATF:
