I have been crusing these boards for a long time,, great place here and now i finally have a question. My son just bought a 2002 sd power Stroke,, says 32000 on the odometer,, after we climbed around i really think its 132,000, brakes and rotors have all 4 been changed, lots of parts have been changed,, and i dont mean after market parts either,, like replacement parts from stuff that has wore out.Muffler is almost completely rusted out,, thats a sign of lots of miles too. I have talked to several people who have said the odometers in these trucks can be disconnected, if so how? What do we look for? I have heard the fuse could be pulled, or even a wire behind the dash disconnected to stop the odometer. Is all this true? I doubt it could have been ran back since it is digital or is that possible too? I think if we find evidence we could take the truck back, its been 2 days now and if we are going to try and return it we need to hurry. Called a Ford Dealer and all i could find out was the last time it was serviced was 11/02 they serviced the tranny and motor and the mileage was 27950. The in service date was 09/02, so in 14 months it looks like someone put almost 28000 on it and then the next year it only got about 4500 on it,,, Something smells funny to me.. ya'll have any suggestions? I was in bed while ago thinking about this and remembered this place and thought hey i bet those guys would know, so here i am,, appreciate the help...
I guess he could have disconnected the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) on top of the rear differential and maybe the two ABS sensors on each of the front wheels also. No speedometer reading, no accumulating miles. Of course the ABS would set a code as it is missing 1 or more of its necessary sensors. Maybe you can look for ABS faults in the computer. About the brakes and rotors, I've seen a lot of people complain about having to change brake pads and rotors at very low mileage, so it very well could have only 32K.
I guess you could also look at the seat and carpet. If the truck had 132K, those would probably be worn. The front end might also have a lot of paint chips from 132K of highway driving. You can't really tell by the tires. Ford used to put 5 matching tires but not anymore. My truck has 4 Pirelli's and the spare is a Michelin.
Well the front of the truck has lots of bug chips, and the seat and carpet is wore pretty good, pads on the peddles are almost worn through too,, we have the dash out of it now and dosent look like it was tampered with. The selling delear was in Alburque NM, we are in portland Or, Dealer said they got in from an auction. I called them while ago and they jumped at the thought of us bringing back, no hesitation at all,,, think they may be a bit worried of they sold us a vehicle that has a speedometer that has been tampered with,, still looking around but not looking good so far,, Thanx for the help guys
Hate to say it but it sounds like there's more than even 132K. I've got 55K on mine and the seat and carpet still look brand new and the pedals show almost no wear.
Not much you can do to disable it. You can't really disconnect anything on these trucks that have to do with the OD without
having other problems. With that said, the truck could very well had the OD rolled back. Yes it can be done but you have to have the right computer equipment to do it. Not everyone has access to be able to do it but it can be done. I can't see what the truck looks like. Rust is not a real good indicator of age or mileage
but other things are. I have 42,000 on my truck and my pedals are not worn at all. With one chip in the hood. Just going off what you have said. I think I would take it back. Something sounds wrong, If they said they will. I would let them based on what you have told.
Take the thing back mine has 142k miles and the pedals show very little or no signs of wear the carpet and seat show some but not a lot. Even if the milage is correct, that truck has been rode hard and put up wet.
I have 60,000 on mine need to replace brake pedal pad
It depends on how your foot contacts pedals
I use the side of my foot, Wears pedals faster

PS I am wearing out the back of the gas pedal from rubbing it on the floor (WOT)
I read an add recently in a mag regarding a programmer for your truck. It also stated it can be used to reset your speedometer. It then went on to say that was for diagnostic purposes only!
Yea sure!!!!
I imagine most dealers/used car dealers have found these by now.

Would definitely take it back. Mine has 58k on it and pedals/carpet still look new. When I was still looking for a truck I saw one advertised in Utah, an 01 F-350/PSD/4X4/6Spd etc. 42k on it. Don't remember price on it but seemed low and almost too good to pass up. Asked the dealer(used car lot/not new car dealer) to send me some pics. Sent me some really good ones, too good. Pics showed pedals worn as you describe. I started asking more questions about the vehicle history, wanted to back track it. Next thing I know I get an e-mail saying the truck was no longer available. My brother-inlaw works in the area, so he went by the place and talked to 'em about the truck. Said they'd give him a really good deal. So much for not being available. He thought that the truck looked like it had more miles than what the odometer was indicating. If their willing to take it back, let 'em. Better for your peace of mind.
