timing problems

i have a `74 Ford F-100 2WD with a 5.9L 360. and i know the timing is off but i cant time it correctly because the harmonic balancer is really rusty. is there any special chemicals or anyway to get the rust of because i cant afford to buy another harmonic balancer.

P.B. Blaster and wipe almost immediatley. May have to do this a few times. Some real fine emry cloth might be in order but be carefull not to sand off the marks.

Also, you can take a white crayon to the timing mark you want to use (ie 6 BTDC).

There is a fluid point pen available with a yellow ink made
especially for marking on metal. Mine is called a
Super Met Al Marker. Works good on timing marks..cheap and
available at most part houses.
