Does anyone add a little #1 diesel fuel to their regular diesel during cold weather to prevent gel? I've heard this a couple of times from diesel owners, saying they may run upto (but not over) a 50/50 mix on occasion. Any thoughts?
You are about to stir up the other big debate on fuel additives. There was just another topic that mentioned putting automatic transmission fluid in the fuel. Besides where would you get both #1 and #2?
I use Stanadyne Performance Formula. It does anti-gel, etc. I wouldn't put anything else in my fuel.
#1 Diesel is not Kerosene. That might really mess up your engine. There are 6 grades of oil: 1 through 6. 1 being the lightest 6 (also known as Bunker C- used in older power plants and old steam ships) being a solid at temperatures below ~175 deg F. Diesel has 2 grades #1 and #2. #2 has more BTU's but it harder to ignite so #1 is used in colder climates.
My truck just left me stranded today and I am 95% sure it was Gelling of the fuel. It warmed up slightly and am preparing to install a module so I stopped the addative use-- what a mistake.

FX4 CC 4x4, no problem. We are here to exchange info.
There are a lot of stories out there about additives in fuel. They used to put lead in gasoline too. But that was for older engines. What we have with the 6.0L is a highly refined and technical engine built for the consumer market. It is not as tolerant as some of the older diesel technology. Stick with an approved additive.
Here in Fairbanks, Alaska we use straight #1 diesel fuel in the cold months. Anything else will gel up at 50 degrees below zero. It has hit that temp this winter. The truck fired right up.

you hit the nail on the head, stick with a good product that also ford recomends. all those old driver tricks will cause you problems with 6.0. I.E. add atf, or mix in gas or 50/50 #1and #2 your asking for trouble. also why make things so hard when it can be easy add some stanadyne.
