Hi, I have several problems that I need help with. I have done a search but have come up with nothing that applies to my type of problems, except one and I'll get to that in a minute. I have a 99 Ranger, 3.0L, auto, 2wd with 60,000K. I keep getting a CEL, the times I had the codes pulled it was always the egr valve. I have taken the valve off and made sure it wasn't stopped up, checked the hoses running to the DPFE sensor, didn't find anything wrong. I would run regular gas but the spark knock or ping, was driving me crazy so I switched to premium. I didn't get the CEL as much or the spark knock. The cost of 93 is crazy so I went back to 87, hence the spark knock and CEL. I did find a thread about spark knock, and how changing the air temp sensor fixed this one members problem, so I went to NAPA and got the sensor, installed it, disconected the neg. cable. to clear the CEL. it didn't help. spark knock was still there and the next day CEL again. another problem is the truck feels like its missing at crusing speeds. and here lately its not wanting to fire when its first cranked up without holding down on the acclerator pedal. I summited that problem to the forum once before and it was suggested I change the plugs which I did and it seemed to help for a while but now its doing it again. I know this is long and I appreciate the forums patience, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm no expert, but I have had the same symptoms on my '99 3.0.
It turned out to be the DPFE sensor. I was told by the dealer where I bought the sensor that this is a common problem with most Fords and that he was very surprised that my sensor lasted nearly 100K.
As far as the pinging goes, I replaced the fuel filter and the pinging has been elininated. I have also found that using a fuel with some ethanol in it also helps (in this case, I use a fuel which contains 10% ethanol).
Hi cfwez, thanks for the info. Do you have the metal DPFE sensor or the plastic one? I read somewhere on the forum that the plastic type last longer. The 98 model someone said has the plastic one just wondering if it will fit the 99 model. Also wonder if NAPA carries them. If you don't mind me asking, what does the dealer charge for them? Thanks again
My original DPFE was the matal type, the new one is black plastic. The dealer where I bought the sensor indicated that there had been some sort of design cange.
I don't know if the '98 will fit the '99. However, the Ford part number is :F77Z 9J460 AB, I paid $76.02 plus tax of course, at the dealer. By the way, I checked at several major parts stores in my area (SW PA) and they all said that this sensor is a dealer only part.
Cleaning the MAF sometimes helps cure pinging. I have the same issue but its been to cold to get out there and work on it. I plan on cleaning the MAF and if that doesn't work I'll replace the DPFE.
Hi Ken00, thanks, I will try that, I just replaced the thermostat, the parts house said a stock one is 192 degrees, I replaced it with an 180 degree, I also got a fuel filter but I ran out of daylight and didn't get to put it on. After I get it installed and run it a few days I will post an update.
Hey all, here's an update, changed DPFE sensor, no more CEL, changed fuel filter, pinging still there, changed back to 93 octane and thought I heard some pinging today, must just be the nature of the beast. Checked MAF , its clean. NAPA and Autozone in my area (Winston-Salem,NC) carries the DPFE sensor. NAPA part # is 2-20212. The guy ran it through a business for me so I got it at a discount price, about $48.00. Thanks for all the help!
