I ordered a diablo chip and knew that it required to run premium. I live in a small town and checked the 6 gas stations and found that all the premium pumps are 91 octane. Will the chip work with 91 octane or did I waste $215

I'm sure Ken could answer this better than me, but I have the chip in my 01 sd 5.4, and ran 89 with no pings, I usually run 90 or over, but somtimes I am to far out to get a choice.
And do you need to run premium under all conditions? At high altitudes, the effective compression ratio is lower due to the lower atmospheric pressure, so we can get away with leaner mixture and more advanced timing. Would this chip still require premium at high altitudes?
all we have in cal is 91... so that is what you should run... from whtat i have been told, it is fine.... now, that being said, the guy that sold me my chip said 87 was fine to run with the chip.... he said that if i had pinging with that octane, to move up the ladder.... this goes in the face of everything else i have read.... so, as soon as i get my chip all dialed in... i will try that out and see what happens.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Apr-02 AT 09:41 AM (EST)]Abendx- Run your tank empty then only put in 10 or so gallons of 87 octane for your experiment. If your truck does start pinging, you don't have to burn the full tank to make room for the 91 again. And don't waste your money on those "octane boosters". Most don't work.
good idea! i just sent back my chip for updating (we haven't yet gotten teh speedo recaled yet).... so if it is fixed up when i get it back in... i will be ready for this experiment.
i do have a solid check engine light now and am exibiting all the symptoms of the IAC valve problem, but from what i am hearing, the check engine light would not be thrown from a bad IAC valve....
so, i saked my diablo dealer if he thought it could be the chip and he didn't think so... he has a feeling that i probably have a emmisions sensor that went bad.... i have an appt at the dealer on monday as they don't so emmisions type work on saturdays?
