I have a 96 Aerostar XLT extended with the 4.0 engine. All of the turn signals and brake lights on the van work fine. My problem is I have no voltage to the left turn indicator at the trailer plug when the turn signal is on. The wiring appears to be factory installed ( I bought the van used ). I know there must be a module somewhere in the vehicle to convert the separate brake/turn indicators to the combined output I see at the trailer connector, but I have been unable to find it. If anyone can be of help I would greatly appreciate it.
If the left trailer light functions properly for braking but not for the left turn signal, I can't help you because I don't have a good wiring diagram for these vans.
If the left light doesn't work either for brake or turn indicators, you likely have a wiring problem. The turn/brake portion of the trailer harness plugs into the "camper connector" (per my Haynes manual), which splits off the main wiring harness on the left side of the van. IIRC, it was a two-pole connector about a foot forward of the left taillight behind the interior trim panel. If you remove the rear seat and some of the panel screws, you can pull the panel far enough inward to get to the conenctor.
If the power is getting to the camper connector, the problem is in the trailer wiring harness. If it's not functioning there, you can trace it forward via the wire colors
Only the turn signal fails, brakes and parking lights function fine. I am new to the group, what does IIRC mean? I will check the connector behind that panel, Thanks again for the info.
Don't bother pulling off the panel unless you want to check the wire colors (it's a lot of work). The two pins in that connector carry the combined function - one for the trailer left brake/turn light, one for the trailer right brake/turn light. Therefore your problem lies further upstream.
Good News!
I found a small fuse panel hidden behind an access door located inside a storage cubby. The storage cubby is to the left of the rear seat. The fuse panel covers all of the factory installed wiring for the trailer connection. I found the panel when I started to remove the inside panel mentioned above. The fuse that covered the failed light was open.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
