94 Explorer - Transmission issues
Automatic Transmission
112,000 miles
OD Issues:
Driving down the highway at speed (I can't give an exact speed as I have speedo issues now too, but it's happened I'm guessing between 60 and 75MPH)
Roll lightly into the throttle to accelerate and the transmission will start hammering (for lack of better terms). It feels to me like it SHOULD be downshifting, but it's not. If I go WOT it will downshift without problems (which seems odd that I need to get that hard into the throttle for it to downshift at higher speeds).
Is this a sign of my OD band going bye bye?
Transmission fluid was a little dirty last time I checked and I have had time to check it since these problems came up (unfortunately the vehicle sits while I"m at school and I get to it maybe once a week)
This started on a trip home after some aggressive driving in the big city trying to keep up with traffic and such.
Hopefully this frigid MN weather will subside soon and I can get out and try to pinpoint what provokes this.
Thanks,
jw
Are you sure it doesnt need a tune up? It the spark plug wires are old you will develope a miss that can be perceved as a trans problem. Also, the first generation EXs had trouble with the two passenger side servos. The seals will harden and then, when its cold outside, they dont seal and cause shifting concerns. You need to get the codes, if any, pulled also.
This engine miss problem can also be a cause for the trans trouble in that expedition especially if you have the 4.6/5.4. The plugs on the passenger side in the back can get corroded and cause a miss that can seem like trans troubles.
It really did not feel like an ignition issue. It only happened under very light throttle at 70-75mph, like it wanted to downshift but wasn't. It hit very hard when it did it, I'm almost positive it wouldn't have been as harsh if it would have been ignition (almost like I was hitting a solid object over and over type harsh).
But like I say, I never did anything to fix it. I tried to replicate it and could never make it happen. Trans fluid is still the same...
It was indeed in need of a tune-up though. Replaced plugs and wires while I was at it, and the old plugs had burned themselves down to a .082" gap. (suprised it was still firing)
Near the end of last summer I started running into this problem again. Right around that time I had the transmission flushed as it was due and I had been putting it off already.
For the first while I was positive it was a transmission issue and kept checking fluids and kept trying to figure it out while in the back of my head wondering if it wasn't an issue at the motor (air/fuel/spark).
Fluid has remained clean and at the proper level and as of 3 weeks ago when I last drove it, however I have determined that it is deffinetly an issue at the motor as it has started backfiring during light throttle. (worst part is it's not throwing a code to help me out)
Thanks to school and work schedules I've had a hard time working on it.
So have I found the problem? nope...
but I have determined it's not the transmission (yet anyway)
