I've had that happen before on a GM car with a Muncie 4-spd. Turned out the shifter fork had broken internally. Required a rebuild and some new parts including the cluster gear to repair.
I'd remove the tranny from the truck and take it down to a shop to have them look at it. At least this way you save on the labor for removal and installation.
