Is there a way i can swap out my ashtray for the piece that has the empty space i can put things in? It looks like you probably could at a glance. The Air bag on/off switch would probably go with it. Is there a way i can do it without replacing the whole dash?
I don't see why not. Probably just have to wire up the air bag switch. Shouldn't be any reason why you'd have to tear you whole dash apart.
I just went outside and looked at how its installed, there are only three screws holding it on. I have the setup with the empty storage space. Check to see how your ash tray setup is installed. Mine had one screw in the middle on top and two screws on the bottom corners. BTW, what year is your ranger? Probably won't fit on an older ranger. I'm not sure what year ford started using this dash setup. Good Luck.

I just installed a Midland 510 CB (small unit), over the ashtray opening of my 2004 Ranger. Actually I removed the ashtray (it simply slides out, like for normal emptying), and mounted the bracket in the "landing zone" of the lip of the ashtray. The CB pretty much covers the opening left by removing the missing ashtray. The two holes for the bracket will be very unnoticeable if/when I remove the bracket and slide the ashtray back in. The installation looks very good. I had thought of looking at a truck that didn’t come with the ashtray “option” to see if the ashtray opening had a cover on it or if the bottom of dash was different (a different location for the air bag switch/light). I expect that Ford simply puts a cover over the ashtray opening.
