new 390 won't start

I just finished my 390 buildup. I can't seem to get it started. I pulled the valve cover and sparkplug for cyl 1. put it on tdc . both valves wer closed and the dist. was pointing to cyl 1. It trys to start but quits as soon as I let off the starter. It is getting gas and spark. Any ideas?

What ignition system are you running? Duraspark?
Are you familiar with the "no-start" symptoms of a bad ballast resistor? Is your problem quite similar to that?

The motor was running when I pulled it. All the same stock ignition parts are there from before.

It does sound like ignition cutting out. Try pulling the coil + wire off and run a jumper wire from the battery straight to the coil + post. See if it will start and run this way but not too long, the coil will overheat with 12 volts on it..

I will try that tomorrow after the bat charges. Is this the correct firing order? 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

Yes that's correct. I just noticed you're breaking in a motor? In that case you could run it maybe 30 min. but it will sure cook your points and coil.

I have the electronic ignition (no points). Is that what people mean by DuraSpark?

It could be you timing is retarded..try cranking the distributor, clockwise about 1/2 inch and see if it makes a differance....

Thanks for all the feedback. I burned out the starter that night so I have to wait till I can get a new one.

I have checked the ignition timing 4 or 5 times now checked the firing order 3 times and pulled the timing cover and double checked the cam timeing. Got another carb. Reinstalled the intake because it was leaking water into the crankcase. put it all back together again. Damn thing still won't start. Just sputters and coughs. I don't know what else to do. Do you guys think I might have a leaky headgasket?

Does it start at all? or just sputter and cough without starting?
A leaky head gasket will not keep it from starting. Do you have good fuel to the carb? The Duraspark needs a full 12v to start well, might see if your bat is keeping good voltage while cranking the engine over. Keep at it!!

This might be silly and don't take offense, but are the plug wires hooked properly? #1 thru #4 on the pass. side and #5-#8 on the drivers side? Just wondering.
