just got it today...well, i got it the 4th, picked it up today. its for my front D44 TTB. im pretty stoked about this. ok, heres the deal, i can all the way through everything on the install up to the actual install of the mini spool. once i pop the cover off the dif im lost. i know most of you out there coulod instal this blind foleded, but i cant and i need your help. if you can, can you tell me EXACTLY how to replace the spiders with this thing, i need everything, torque specs and whatnot. please.
Here goes:
-Pull both axles (you have the cover off so i figure you've already done this)
-remove mainbearing caps (be sure to mark what side they came off and what direction they point)
-pull the carrier (might need a hefty prybar)
-be careful of the bearing cups, don't mess them up and note what side they came from
-take note of any shims that came out and what side they came from
-mount carrier in vice with the ring gear flange pointed "up"
-drive out the roll pin that holds the spider gear cross shaft in place
-drive out the cross shaft
-pull spider gears
-install minispool
-drive cross shaft through hole (non-splined) in minispool, make sure the roll pin holes line up
-reinstall roll pin
-place carrier in housing (rememeber the bearing cups)
-reinstall shims
-reinstall main bearing caps
-tighten bolts to 80-90 lbs
-recheck backlash (you shouldn't need to adjust it if you put all the shims back where they came from)
-reinstall stub axle
-reinstall centersection (30-40 lbs)
-keep going 'til you're done
youre the man, thanks.....i also had one more thing, is the any specail way to get the rotor assembily off the spindle other than just prying it off. i just put in new wheel bearings, and i dont want to mess them up pulling the rotor assembily off. any hints tricks??
Dunno if you know, but there are two locknuts in there. You pull one with teh spanner, pull the spacer with your fingers, and then you have to pull another with the spanner. i you have those out the rotors should just slide right off. (this is of course only if you've already removed the locking hubs)
its a 91, its got that ratcheting lock nut that hold everything one, im just wondering if theres an easier way to get the rotor of than just pulling, it is pressed on to the spindle, and it coes right off, just with a lot of pulling.
one question hoxiii how do you put the clip in that holds the passenger side axle in if you have a minispool in there. I cant figure out in my mind any way to hold that axle shaft in.
Fordman300
The clip that holds it in snaps on the axle shaft between the center section and the splined spider gear. you could call it "behind" the spider gear. after the minispool is in it would go between the spool and the center section.
Also, earlier IFS 44's don't use a c-clip to retain the stub axle. Instead there is a retainer plate between the bearing and the flange on the stub, and the another bearing retainer on the other side of the bearing. to remove, you pull the 3 bolts that hold the outer bearing retainer and PULL.
The Dana 44 is stock with 5-297x Dana Spicer UJoints on the axle and there are 3 of them. Spicer makes a heavier UJoint, 5-760x that is an upgrade for it and is stronger. The 297 sells for around $12 and the 760 sells for about $22. Of course there are CTM for about $200 each, and the OX for $139. You can get them form places like Randy's R&P and Reider. I get them from this guy and he has free shipping with a $8.95 handling on all orders.
Some guys the run lockers on the D44 adapt a D50 inner axle to beef it up because after the joints it will be the weakest link. There is a trick becuase you have to do away with the c-clip to do that modification. I have considered doing that.
BTW, the Spicer joints have a very good warranty. The CTM are rebuildable, but are also high maintenance and high $$$.
Idio, I got my March Issue of FourWheeler today, and on page 84 titled "Project Fiery RedHead Part 2: Adding Beef to Ford's TTB." They are rebuilding an F150's TTB, ujoints, bearings, intalling a Detroit TrueTrac, Ball Joints . . .
I have a lockrite in my dana 44 ttb, and you can't run the c clip with them in the instructions it said to place a spring such as an old valve spring in the section where the axle splits, but I will say I didn't do this and have run it for 2 yrs as a mud drag truck, and this thing is constantly in mud, and water running 400hp small block, ie it is abused, and I have had no problems running it withouth the clip
tomorrow is the big day, gunna start at 11, gotta get it done in time to take my girl to a movie and.........ya. i hope everything goes smoothly, im reading that four wheel article right now, good stuff. i have to wait till it breaks before i can do anything. but ya, wish me luck.
