Engine/tranny combo

Last night a friend at work told me his wife's friend has a '74 Galaxy with a 351w for sale for 500.00; it supposedly runs good. Since I've decided to swap the 292 for a 302 anyway, this sounds like a pretty good deal, but he doesn't know what tranny it has. I'm really after a 302/C4, but for the money I can be swayed. For what I will be using my truck for, the smaller engine/tranny would be fine. But my question is, what tranny would be likely be backing up the 351? And as far as the engine swap goes, would there be many differences between the 302 and 351? I already have a pretty good idea of what to expect for the 302 swap. I've also seen what 351's can do to a tank full of gas. Decisions, decisions......

The 351 has a taller deck so it is naturally a little wider than the 302 (check here for details http://www.wrljet.com/fordv8/small.html) It would still probably have the C4 bolted up behind it as it has the small block bolt pattern.....

What truck are you putting it in? The 351W has some advantages for pickups and is prolly smaller than the 292-and lighter maybe. If you are going to use it as truck at all, the extra cubes will be nice. For a commuter the 302 will have better fuel mileage, but prolly not very much diff.

DW, A word of caution, Folks often get their 351s mixed up, I am not trying to say the car doesn't have a W in it, just make sure that it is a W. There is a 351 W, M, C. I think the Ms came after the Cs and are simular on the inside.

Just give it a through checking out.

I'm a big FE fan and know that all 360s are 390s on sale day because you can't look at them and tell the difference.

Engine will be in my '62 stepside. Truck wants to be a decent ride/weekend hauler - not show quality since I want to use it for what it is; big cubes aren't particularily necessary in my head. But like I said, for the price I can be swayed. I'm hoping for a C4 (didn't know bolt patterns were different from C6). Probably be a week before I can look at the vehicle. Thanks guys!

The C4 is a lighter weight tranny compaired to the C6. The C4 was usually found behind 302s and I6s and has the sm block bell. The HD C6 comes in all three bell pattern cases, and is often referred to as bullet proof.

The 351C and 351W share bell bolt patterns while the 351M has the same bell as the 429 and 460.

fuzed yet?

There is diversity among FoMoCo A/T's

A point of order guys, there are C6's with Windsor pattern, and there C5's [which are a heavier version of C4] with both 385 and Windsor patterns.

Now that I got your attention & your hopes up, these are seldom found in Pass Car Apps, although if a car has trailer/ towing pkg they may well be there. More commonly these "Goodies" are in F & E series vehicle.

I run a "Built" C5 behind a 460 (series 385) engine and I drag race it. I do not "work my Slick" by pulling my trailer or any weight with it, true enough. Never the less I'm confident the C5 would be able to handle it alright.
