Wow - reading these posts and I'm thinking it's got something to do with a "feature" that allows you to run on 4 cylinders, for limited time, to get off the road... it's discussed in the owners manual someplace...
Scary. I'm at 400 miles and now I can't wait to see what happens at 3000 mile mark...

For the record

I am at 9,000 miles and have had only one problem , car tires on a truck. Other than that, nary a problem. Replaced the cheapa** tires with Michelins and have never looked back. BTW, I still have four of those original tires if anybody is in the market for 17 inch car tires. The fifth one I left somewhere with no sidewall left to enjoy.

Ford did a great job on this build, and the few rants I have read here are evidence of that....

vgoetz- what tires did you have to start with? I asked the question somewhere on this site asking what the difference between OWL and BWT (or whatever it is) tires ... no one replied.

I've got the Generals .. OWL, All Terrain. "P255/70RX17"
does the "P" indicate passeneger tires rather than truck tires???

AND - There is a "fail-safe" mode that the truck engine can go into if the engine is overheating... it operates one-half the cylinders to allow the engine to cool. Read all about it in your owner's manual. There is a TON of self-help in there. I hope I never need any of it.

Tires

P means passenger. I hear it saves Ford a whopping $10.00 on every truck. 400,000 trucks later I understand.

The tires are rated well within the load capacity limits of the truck...plus they give one heck of a nice ride.

To the "if it's made by man it will break crowd" :

You are EXACTLY right. ..... HOWEVER, man CAN do fault trees, fmeas, reliability testing and accelerated life testing, etc., to make sure that the PROBABILITY that it will break is minimal.

These tests cost $$$, and we KNOW by now how much ford will pay to make something ABOVE the fray, rather than just average.

Sorry, if I bought a new car that had a pre-existing set of flaws making it unreliable and undriveable, I would be in an attorney's office. It's not the DEALER'S fault that Ford is manufacturing crap, or pushed the vehicle to market way too fast.

You gotta play hard ball with them, or you'll get ignored. I had a flaw on my truck via the bug guard that was scratching the paint on the fender (down to bare metal btw). They started the "it's not our fault, it's the accessory people"... the accessory people said it's ford's fault, etc.. NBever mind that I ordered the guard with the truck and the dealer installed it, and I never knew it was sold through an accessory distributor. Had an attorney write a letter and it was in the body shop within two days.

It's a shame you have to smack 'em with a bat... but, hey, when you're an isignificant customer (in ford's eyes), you gotta make sure they know you're serious.
