From reading here, and other forums, it seems that most of the nagging problems of the 03 6.0L PSDs have been resolved in the late 03/early 04 motors. One thing that seems to be happening though is that some folks are experiencing injector failures even in these late motors.
Is it me, or is there a weakness here? I know that on the forums you hear a lot higher percentage of problems per capita than you would see in a real life cross section of owners, but it seems to be one of the things that keeps coming up.
If this is indeed the case, are the injectors likely faulty to begin with, or could the failures have been prevented by different fuel, more regular oil changes and/or different oil/viscocities?

All diesel engines have some injector failures. Failures might be avoided by different oil/viscosities, more frequent oil changes and I am sure cruddy fuel will aggravate a problem with a weak or poorly manufactured injector.
Some of us with the suspect C94 injectors have been running just fine. I wouldn't worry about it. Do your maintenance on time and err on the side of caution.
Good recommendation SBV45. I like hearing things like that since I am picking up my new 03 F550 tomorrow. It has an early build date and sure to have the c94 injectors. I have talked to several other owners and I think what you have stated here is very true. I believe some of the problems (not defending c94 injectors here) might be as a result of engines being horse beat. Just an observation and extraction of comments posted on here.
I had a Ford diesel mechanic tell me to put a quart of automatic transmission fluid in the fuel.......or two quarts in my case (auxilary tank). He said it would help lubricate the injectors. Dirty fuel I think is also a problem. I only fuel up at the big truck stops that have truckers lined up getting fuel and still I had a problem with dirty fuel. It might be that you would need to change the fuel filters more often also.
He also assured me that DOT could tell the difference between the fuel with transmission fluid and farm fuel.
I would NOT put automatic transmission fluid in my fuel. Stanadyne Perfomance Formula is about all I will add to the fuel. Change your filters more often, Yes. Drain the horizontal fuel filter water trap more than the once a month recommendation, yes. But don't go putting something like ATF in your fuel.
If, that is not good then why would a diesel mechanic at a Ford dealership tell me to do that. BTW, this is the one dealership that has actually been able to fix my truck and fix it right when it has been in there.
Who do you trust if you can't trust Fords own mechanics.

I have no idea why a mechanic will tell you that. If it is a common practice, I am sure other diesel owners would have heard that by now. Besides, I won't label Ford mechanics by one mechanic at a dealership.
I dont know about the 6.0, but I have herd this before from older diesel owners. I would not do this until I was certian it is ok. I would recomend standyne as well.

I think so, I'm just really timid about spending $50k on a truck (alright, SUV) that seems to be causing so many folks so much grief.
I wanted to buy a diesel due to the durability and longevity, as well as the towing potential. I'm just really worried about the motor/trans and whether it's gonna last 150 or 200k miles (just like everyone else seems to be).
I realize a forum like this has a much higher complaint ratio than the "real world" - since many folks come here to solve their problems. That being said, it doesn't make it much easier to shell out the samolians for something that doesn't instill too much confidence.

Understood, however you have been reading so you have knowledge about things like oil type, oil level. Do not chip the thing, all kinds of good intelligent information.

Several years ago when they took most of the sulfur out of diesel fuel, some of the big rig owners used to use ATF with their fuel. At that time some were loosing seals on their fuel pumps. Apparently the sulfur was a lubricant for those seals. Eventually the fuel pump manufacturers replaced those seals with different ones. That is what I heard.
