How capable is my X?

When i made the decision to get my X some time ago I never really considerd 4x4. I didnt think i needed it because i do all my driving in the city. But now i have second thoughts (late). My x is a stock PSD. How good would it be for of road use? what could i add to help? I like big tires but not that big, are the 2x4 any good off-road?. thanks for the help!~

What kind of off-roading do you have in mind?

I can share a bit.

With a 6 inch spring lift front and rear the truck actually did pretty well off road in fireroad - logging road type conditions - even when wet and slick.

Three days ago I got into some pretty hairy stuff with my current Edge 4.5" lift. I could not get back out the way I got in, so I had to go out on a single, side hill track with ruts, rocks and stumps. The hanger lift doesn't do as well off road as the spring lift, but then it rides alot better on the road - which is 90% of the time.

I really wished I was in my Toyota LC, but I put the X in 4WD Low and did the best I could. I almost tagged a couple of trees, but made it out unscathed - TYG.

It's not a Rubicon truck by any stretch of the imagination. General construction sites and muddy hunting fields don't present a problem with decent AT tires and a LSD rear.

Good luck.

I'm not trying to take my X out in a mud hole...... just light to maybe some moderate stuff......I have a ranch out by paris, texas
and when it rains the road(dirt path) gets a little nasty, I fear my x would get stuck so I leave it on the fence perimiter and walk the rest in.... I think maybe some bigger tires for offroad use would do(not to big). I dont think I could afford a lift at this moment. Is there a cheaper way to lift the X up some? Bigger springs? I'm not a truck expert...thanx

I was able to get 33 inch tires on my X with no lift at all, and they don't rub anywhere. There are some real nice tires out there in the 33 inch size bracket, and unless you are going to try to go rock crawling, they are plenty big.

so with a 31-33 inch tire, and having a 2x4 X, it would still be ok for light to maybe some moderate off-road use? Besides looks, Hopefully that will help out in other areas too and make a difference.

33's do rub on 4wd, albiet, very very minimally. I would think on a 2wd they'd be rubbing something fierce.

Do you have an LSD? If you do, get some all terrain tires and you'll more than likely be fine. I drive on sloppy roads all the time and I rarely (like never so far) need to use 4wd. We recently had a big snow and ice storm and I never used 4wd in it either. The only time I do ever use 4wd is when I go out on sand.

Do you mean Limited Slip Diff? if so yes, I just think the stock tires look to small for the X, dont get me wrong they are big,(for an expy) but not the X.

Put 285 75 16R Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's on it and proceed. Anything else will be too big and those may be. An option would be 285 70 16R. Same width - shorter sidewall.

I know how you feel. When I bought my X back in '01 I had a choice between a black one with 4-wheel drive and a toreador red with 2-wheel drive. I WOULD have picked up the black one, but the wife didn't like the idea of buying one with 15000 miles on the clock. It does hold it's own off road if you keep on it and don't stop. Keep in mind that I only did that once and I don't plan on doing it again. Bigger tires would help with traction, but in the end you'll shave a few points off of your mileage. As far as a reccomendation is concerned, I'd get some BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO's. Other than that you can go pickup a new or used X with 4-wheel drive. Best of luck to ya.
