As some of you probably know i just got my new to me 2002 f350 PSD last week. I have been around diesels forever it seems yet this is the first one i have actually owned. When starting this truck it most always takes 5-6 Seconds for it to Start up(using a stop watch),, Seems like it cranks for a long time before it actually fires up. After the first tank I refuled and added the Power Service at the Injector cleaning ratio and its still the same. Nothing wrong with the batterys or the starter, it spins it very well believe me, just most the others i have been around usually fire right up, I have a neighbor with a cummins in his dodge and seems like his fires soon as you hit the key. Also have another buddy with a 2001 Power stroke and his fires right up too. Truck runs perfect other than the starting issue, if its an issue. Just seems like it takes longer to fire than most. Sometimes if i dont wait for the glow plug light to go out it will fire right up, Like if i kill it and run in the store come back out and just start it and dont wait for the light to go out it will usually fire right up.If i wait for the light to go out it spins longer. it hasnt been cold here really so temp is not an issue. Is this normal? Is it bad to not wait for the light to go out when its already warmed and ready? Just tryin to make sure I dont have a problem..
So does it take a while to start in the morning when the engine is cold (ambient temp)? And/or does it do it if you come back from the store and you wait for the WTS to go out and then crank?
If it only cranks for a long time in the morning I'd have to guess relay. Once the engine is warm it will start without the glow plugs heating up. Enough block heat and compression to start witout plugs. Heck my 94 with 252K at the time started in the morning without a relay for a week. It cranked for like 10 seconds before starting.
Someone on here will have a better idea than I will.
it always seems to take a while, whether its warm or cold. i have seen some in our fleet at work that didnt have glow plugs for months at a time and they always started. I would think it was a relay problem too if it was only in the morning, but like i said dosent matter if its warm or cold 5-6 seconds of cranking everytime..
