This may sound a little stupid, but does anyone know where to obtain an x-pipe or something to replace the factory crossover pipe between the exhaust manifolds and the cat? On my T-birds I have used BBK Headers,Mustang x-pipes and Flomaster cat-back systems. I found that Flowmaster makes a cat-back for my truck, but I am still at a loss for a source for the headers (ceramic coated) and x-pipe.
a good muffler shop can make you a CROSSOVER pipe, if your doing a cat back its gonna want the pipe where it is now so youd need a crossover not an x pipe, and if you put shorttys on your truck you can retain the stock crossover and get prettymuch the same effects.
Bassani makes an offroad version that has O2 bung and EGR tube connection for 260 bucks. It is the only one I know of except for a stock replacement. My buddy just ordered one and it should be here soon. We both put headers on our trucks and the stock Ypipe does not fit any longer. I had mine fixed at a shop to kind of fit better but I hope the Bassani will have bigger collector tubes to fit aftermarket headers better.
When you say headers, are you refering to long tube, or the shorties like gibson sells? I am looking for shorties that are ceramic coated. I have used BBK's on my t-birds with excellent results, but haven't found a source for the pickup yet. It is a 5.5l 342 stroker motor. I was going to go with American thunder, but it looks like they don't make "true" duals like I thought only from the muffler back are duals. Any source would be appreciated.
Bassani makes headers for the Ford trucks, they have equal length shorties made for the Y pipe they sell. You can also go with a JBA Firecone header. I've had both and both that I have are ceramic coated. Check out their web sites. They are both high quality headers.
I am talking about shorties. The Gibsons, BBK's and Bassani's will not work with the stock Y-pipe. Buy the Bassani Y-pipe, they have a version with cats and a version without. My buddy just got his non-cat version and it is awesome! It has on 02 bung and tube for the egr tube to connect to. The flanges are 3 inch so they fit on those 3 headers brands of headers perfect. The BBK's are the best for the dollar. The Gibsons are pretty small, the BBK's are 1 5/8's and very nice. The Gibsons have splits on the ears where the Y-pipe bolts up and the tubes are smaller. You can get a torque wrench on the header bolts though, you can only get a wrench on the BBK bolts because the tubes are so large. The Bassani's are in a class of their own and are twice the cost of the others. Edelbrock just started making truck headers, the pictures look nice but I have not seen a pair in person. Use the 1" long stage 8 bolts, don't put the locks on till you have run it a few times and re-tightened the bolts. I tried some Earl's Performance gaskets and they suck. I just installed some Persey's gaskets on a 97 Mustang and they worked perfect so I may go with a set of those.
Thanks for the info TripNDrag, Do you know if BBK also makes a y-pipe? I have had great luck with the BBK product line in the past. I was not able to find a reference to their Truck headers though, so I guess I'll have to research a bit more. I definitely want them ceramic coated, as they seem to last much, much longer.
I called them and they do not have a Y-pipe. Bassani is the only company out of BBK, JBA, Dynomax, Gibson and hooker that I have contacted that make one. I didn't see the ceramic option when I got my truck headers. Mine have discolored a little bit but they look great still. I am sure the Bassani's are much better quality, the BBK's were very dirty around the welds. I wanted to grind them smooth but I didn't want to weaken them so I just left them alone. For 250 bucks I am very happy. I have heard great things about the Summit truck headers but I have never seen them, they were a little less than the BBK's but I have also had great luck with BBK so I stuck with them on the pickup. I have pictures of the Bassani Y-pipe, if you would like me to send them to you just give me an email address.
It is my understanding that we can't post e-mail addresses here, but if you send it to my username at earthlink a .net company, I am sure to receive it. Thanks.
I don't think I had it wrong in the email, I think I just typed it wrong in the post!!! I just tried sending them again so maybe it will work this time.
