I have a 97 150 4x4 manual floor shifter. The 4x4 doesn't engage. I have read some of the other threads and most say to check the vacuum lines. How many are there? I looked at the transfer case and saw one rubber hose coming out of it and going into the engine compartment. I followed it and the end is just dangling near the battery. Is it supposed to be attached somewhere? Thanks for any help.
Sounds like your vacuum line is disconnected, it may be a tee or at the solenoid. I'm unsure of the location on the '97, but the solenoid in my 2000 is on the firewall behind the battery. With the truck running, get someone to lock the truck into 4HI while you're looking into the passenger side of the engine compartment. If the solenoid is working it will make an audible click. That should help you locate it. Does the truck run poorly when you put it into 4HI?
Sorry about getting back to you, pretty busy with the profession...
The way you worded the original question had me thinking the whole system was down.
If your vacuum lines work for 4HI, I see no reason why that would chnage for 4LO. Have you done an RPM check? place the truck in 4HI and 1st and see what kind of rev's you get when moving, then place in 4LO and see if you get any change in revs. It should rev considerably higher for the same speed as you just reduced the gearing by something like 2.69:1. If this does happen, then it's probably just a bulb. If it doesn't change and you can still motor pretty good, then there's a strage linkage problem. No movement, then maybe you're not getting it all the way into 4LO or, again, you have a linkage problem.
It takes a bit of force, but I get a pop when I shift to 4LO in my truck. Then my light comes on.
