carb adapter question

I have a 390 with about 4000 miles on it ,i rebuilt it a while ago and pulled the original holley 4 bbl off and put on a quadrajet with a adapter plate but i cant seem to get it to run right.the holley that was on it was junk and i didnt feel it was worth rebuilding .I know some of you will say quads are junk but ive had over 20 years of luck from them but never tried one on a ford .my 72 f100 4x4 4sp. gets about 12 mph at best and i was trying to up the milage.its a toy and not daily driver so i have time to tinker with it.I heard years ago that the adapter plates cause more problems than there worth.any input would be appreciated

ive used them over the years , you might check in the fe forum, there are a lot of good advice on fe fuel milage questions there. its been my experence the even though you are running a spread bore carb , you are still putting it through a square bore manifold , and havent seen much of a change .i dont have one , but my favorite replacement carb is the eidelbrock carb . ive done several for customers , and once they are set and tuned ,i never see them again, which doesnt do much for my paycheck but makes my friends happy and they tell thier friends , which does do nice things for my paycheck, in reading through the fe forum that seems to be the favorite with them also. even tne remans i have installed are less trouble than most good luck, bob
