The underhood insulation has gotten all grimy and muddy due to my off-road activities, it's even coming off of it's backing is some places. Any negative effects from taking this stuff off besides the engine noise?
You got underhood insulation? My 99.5 V10 has never had it. Don't hear much from up there either. So my advice would be "let 'er rip" (little play on words there).
There is one negative effect. If you notice, the shape of the insulation is designed to effectively smother an under hood fire. The attaching points utilize a plastic fastner that is designed to melt at a lower temp than usual, so as to drop the insulation onto the engine compartment and smother out any flames. It is part of a DOT design requirement.

I knew these superduty's were Hot (meaning cool trucks)
but engine fires ,with all that plastic we'd die from fumes before we got out.HE HE

It's already too ratty looking to keep taking off and putting back in. Not too worried about the fires, I've got my extingusiher handy, and with those gaping holes in the wheelwell, I should be able to get it out in time OUCH don't go reminding me about my old truck, makes me want to breakdown and cry!
I do not work in this field. I have had the unfortunate experience of having to buy 3 cars in the past 18 months. All the dealers from Accura to Volvo point this feature out, claiming their mfr is "so smart". I wondered why Mercedes had it, but so did a Ford Focus. I checked into it and found out it is a new DOT design requirent.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Apr-02 AT 07:23 PM (EST)]my 2002 has the insulation too.... i have had to spray it off a few tmes and the dirt had came off after a couple minutes of hitting it from differnt angles... now if i could figure out how to get the half a million cat-tail spurs off of the damn thing... lol... don't drive through these cat-tail busshes is a lesson i learned.... as i never had done taht before nor had a real idea of what was going to happen (i had teh windows down.. and we are talking quite the show of these little spurs (or whatever they call them) everywhere.. including inside of teh truck... which i didn't notice until a passenger pointed it out ... dumb me though i was looking outsdie of the trucks windshield. lol).
as for the fire safety... well, insurance can always get you a new truck, although you may run into problems if they figure out you pulled it???? really all taht matters is that you and ur passengers get out ok!
