My wife and I are to be baptized next month. I would like to hear your stories if you have ever been baptized. My wife is a little scared of this. I told her there is nothing to be scared of. I look foward to hearing from you.
dude,
i decided to be baptised when i was like 16. its wasnt like like what i thought it would be like (from watching others).
at our church they hid this huge bath tub deal behind a sliding door, (behind where the choir sat). you had to stand in a little line(they would do 3 or 4 people at a time) and wait for the pastor to say some stuff.
when it was your turn you would walk into the tub. it was actually really warm, kinda like bath water. he would say who you were and how he first met you and things like that. then he said his preacher stuff (dont remember exactly what he said) then he puts his arm behind you leans you back and dunks you under the water.
after your dunked you get out of the tub (be careful to not almost slip and fall like i about did). then you go and put some dry clothes on and its all over.
then after church every old man and lady will com up and congradulate you and tell you thier life story.
nothing at all to be afraid of. you dont even notice that there are live tv cameras broadcasting your face around the world. and dont worry, all of the dye in the water will wash off within a few weeks.
seriously, being baptised is a great thing. there is nothing at all to be afraid of. even if she may have been not so good of a person (which was me), its not like your gunna put you feet in the water and be stricken dead. thats part of the deal, it doesnt matter what you've done in your past.
( which kinda is hard to think even jeffory dahmer went to heaven in the eyes of a southern baptist. once you are saved, it doenst matter what you have done. )
It's a piece of cake. In our church they have the pastor and assistant pastor lower the person into the water. It's only long enough the get wet, maybe 2 seconds tops.Believe it or not I know of people who were babtized in the winter by cutting a hole in the ice.Yeow!.I chose the heated tub lol.
A lot depends on the pastor - some take great pains not to terrify someone who is afraid of water, while others are totally insensitive to the fears of the individual. Have her express her concerns to the pastor and he/she will probably be happy to calm your wife's fears.
Is the baptism 'backward' (symbolic of the old nature being dead and buried in baptism with Christ) or 'forward' (going forth in new life and faithfulness to Christ)?
Backward requires a greater trust in the person doing the baptism. Congratulations on your decision - your wife will do just fine.
The baptism will be backward. My wife is going to express her concerns at the baptism class and hopefully everything will work out and she will get baptized with me. I think it would be cool to be baptized with my wife and tell everyone of our commitment to God!
yes, you will be wearing a robe. (or atleast i was).
my biggest tip would be to bring your own towel/towels.
the church told me not to worry about bringing a towel, and that they would probide them.
when it came time to dry off they handed me one of them 1x3 gym towels.... i was like you gotta be kidding... i'm soaking wet and you give me a gym towel???
also you will be wearing a bathing suit under your robe so maybe bring a plastic shopping bag to put it in when your done.
They told us to wear underwear under the robe. I guess this is because the robe will be transparent when wet, i.e. wet T-shirt contest. We were told the robes are semi-transparent and pretty thick so that will help too. The last thing I want is everyone seeing the family jewels or my wife's cans!
