V10 Engine pinging

On Sunday, I towed our TT to the dealer for some minor warranty work, and much to my surprise, the engine seemed to be pinging!:-X23 It never pings when I am not towing. In O/D on the freeway, if I gave it a little extra throttle, it would ping until I put my foot down enough to cause it to downshift. I don't remember this ever happening before- at least not to this degree. I was running 87 octane Chevron (I usually run 89 when towing). Is this something to be concerned with? Does anybody else have a problem like this? Is their a sensor that may be faulty??

V10 Engine pinging

I have a 2001 excursion LTD, V-10, 3.73 LS, 4X4, I tow an 8000 pound boat, I generally run 89 octane gas. Once in a while I fill the tank with 87, when I do the engine will ping slightly when loaded in overdrive when climbing a hill. It never pings when I run 89 octane. Every ford I've ever owned has done this. What ever you do, don't let your dealer start replacing sensors unless you have a trouble code generated. I've been there with a previously owned truck, they fixed it for good, it never ran well after the five trips to the dealer for a ping they couldn't find. The gas we have available to us these days is not of the quality you would expect, the 87 octane can have a 1.5 point swing, this means you can get 87 octane fuel that is anywhere from 85.5 to 88.5 octane. That's why I run 89, it can legally be from 87.5 to 90.5. Our engines are rated and certified to run 87 octane min.

I seem to remember reading in the owner's manual that "light pinging" under heavy load is normal. I have also found that my truck tows better with "high-octane" gas.

I usually run 89 octane when towing, but since this was a short trip, and I haven't towed recently, I was running 87 octane. Man, what a difference.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll sleep a little better tonight.
