I recently got a really good deal on a 98 ranger. The problem is that I believe there was a governor installed that keeps the speed from going over 70. This truck did belong to a teenager.
I heard that there is a chip that needs to be installed to fix the problem, but I don't know what I need to do to:
1. find the chip
2. install the chip
3. not break my "new" truck
What kind of engine do you have? Is it tuned properly? Unless you know that it has had new spark plugs, plug wires, air/fuel filters, and PCV valve installed recently, then you might think about starting there.
From everything that I've read, Ford sets the speed governor at about 90-95 MPH at the factory on the '98 Rangers, give or take a few MPH. Mine is in that range.
It is possible, I believe, for a chip to be installed to lower the speed limit, but that is not something that is very common.
I'd think I'd be easy to tell if it was a governor. Does it accelerate halfway quickly up to 70 and then abbruptly stop? Once at seventy do you have to keep your foot on the floor? If you do keep you foot on the floor does the engine surge off and on(fuel cutoff) If it is a governor contact the original owner to see if they have the original chip or if there is a shutoff switch for yours.
My governor is at 98ish. You definitely know when you hit it. It abruptly turns something off (spark or injectors, or fuel pump) Anyways it cuts off til i get down to about 80-85 before it turns back on. I would bet there is another prob. I mean the HAVE limiters, but not to many people have them. And not on a ranger that already has a governor. Im worried about removing the governor, not installing a lower one.
As mentioned a clogged fuel filter makes a great rev limiter. Not likely that the cat would be clogged on a 98, but if you have a vacuum gauge just follow the directions that came with it to checked for a clogged cat.
